Her eyes were blue, once.

Branwen's grandfather was a renowned adventurer of the Guild of Galas'nor. Even in his old age, he still traveled the lands far and wide, slaying all manner of beasts. She rarely saw him, but he often wrote to her, weaving tales of his exploits, and occasionally sending her a small trophy. A bugbear's tooth, or a werewolf's claw. At one time, she collected such things, keeping every trinket he gave her on a shelf in her room, to be adored.

She lived with her mother and father in a small, creekside village. Her mother was a teacher, the only teacher of the small hamlet's only schoolhouse, responsible for the twenty-something youths of the various families throughout most of the day. Her father was a weaver and tailor, who ran his shop as part of their own house. They weren't rich by any means, but they made well. Branwen's grandfather would occasionally send a few gold, although her family would have much rather he spent it on his own well being, so that he could come back alive one day.

That day came when Branwen was 17. Her grandfather returned to the small hamlet of his birth a hero, and bearing a trophy of his greatest achievement - the hide of a slain dragon. His sword had bested the mightiest beast of all, and its hide and scales alone were worth thousands of gold. His old bones were satisfied. Selling such a prize would easily net him enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his days, and likely his family as well.

Their last night was spent in celebration. Wine and cheeses were had, and the entire village joined in. News of the old man's prize spread throughout - of a square of a dragon's hide worth enough to live on easily for the rest of one's life. That news reached even the poorest, and the most desperate of the small village's inhabitants.

It was a new moon, that night. The sky, and the village, was pitch black. A single man snuck easily into the small house. The dagger's blade had no gleam for lack of illumination, and the old man's years of adventuring experience did him little good when he was passed out in a drunken stupor. He didn't awake even as his throat was slit.

The girl's father sputtered as he followed suit, his curses dying in his mangled throat. The burglar had expected the dragon's hide to be in the old man's room, but it was actually in his son's. He took it with his left hand, making his way out into the living room. There, Branwen stood with her mother, having been awakened by the creaking footsteps throughout the old house.

The moment she saw the knife stained with blood, and the dragon's hide in the man's other hand, the mother charged in rage, attempting to bash in the burglar's skull with a candlestick. But his knife found her stomach, three times in quick succession. He continued to stab, even as the young, black-haired girl rushed between them. Branwen found only a blade to the side for her trouble.

The assailant made off into the night with his prize. And as Branwen laid dying on the floor, surrounded by the corpses of her family, she prayed. But her prayer was not one of solace, or of hope. She prayed not for the return of those slain. She prayed in hate. She prayed for vengeance.

That prayer was answered.

The voice heeded her call. The voice of Tuoi, the master of souls. He had already claimed that of her mother, her father, and her grandfather. Their home was now with him, in the afterlife. A normal person might have begged him to return those souls, and set everything right again. But the god had appeared before Branwen only because he knew that this was not her wish.

She wished only for the power to carry out her will. And for that power, she pledged her soul to the darkness. As her eyes faded from blue to black, the last emotion she ever felt was regret.






The burglar ran through the village, laughing to himself. It was not a laugh of triumph, or of arrogance. It was a madman's laugh of failing sanity. He had killed. He had killed four people, for a bunch of dragon scales. But it was all worth it, he reminded himself. For too long, life had trampled him. He had been left homeless and debt-ridden, abandoned by all his peers. He deserved the gold far more than that happy family. What more did they need? They got what was coming to them, after flaunting their riches in front of the whole village.

He ran by the girl without even noticing her presence. She leaned against the wall as his steps echoed through the dark night. For a moment, he stopped, and looked back, thinking he had seem something out of the corner of his eye. But there was nothing. Reassuring himself, he continued his flight. He couldn't sell the hide here. He would have to run to a larger city, where he wouldn't be recognized...

His thoughts were interrupted by a footstep. A footstep that was not his, or so he thought. It was loud, almost like a stomp, echoing throughout the alleyway he fled through. He stopped for a moment, trying to discern if it had been his own feet. The night was silent, save for the chirping of crickets. He looked behind him, and saw no one.

It was merely his imagination, he told himself. No one would be right in the head after doing what he had just done. He turned and ran further, further away from the village, nearing the fence of its outskirts. Every once in a while, he thought he saw a figure - a figure of a girl in all black, just out of the corner of his eye, or beyond some tree or fence post. But the moment he turned to focus on it, it disappeared.

He stopped for a moment only to catch his breath. He was in the woods now, the houses merely landmarks on the horizon. But as he looked back, he saw the shadow. There could be no shadow cast by light on the night of the new moon. No, this was a shadow within a shadow. A shadow in the shape of a girl.

"...Who...who goes there...!?" He asked, his voice wavering. The shadow didn't move or respond. For a moment, he thought perhaps it was merely the trees, the shadows of the branches coming together into such a shape. But at that moment, a chill wind cut through the forlorn woods, sending the faint shadows of the treetops waving too and fro. And within that moment, the shadow he saw remained still.

He turned and ran. But the moment he did so, he saw the shadow again, just in front of him. He screamed, dropping the dragon hide in his fear and turning again, fleeing for his life. He fled until his legs wouldn't move anymore, his body collapsing against the base of a tree as he pitifully gasped for air, having ran for almost twenty minutes without rest.






He didn't even have the energy left to scream. He merely shut his eyes. He blocked the figure out of his mind, as though to banish it with his very thoughts. The underbrush of the forest, the fallen leaves, betrayed not a sound. There was no crunching of leaves, no snapping of twigs at the figure's footsteps. He waited minutes, what seemed like hours, more than enough time for the spectre to close the distance between them. For a moment, a small moment, he had hope. Perhaps it had truly been banished, or had simply left for some other purpose. He opened his eyes once more, taking in the lightless night for the last time.






His was the first soul she claimed for her master.






She left the dragon's hide where it lay. Some other traveler would happen upon it. She simply didn't care. Taking leave of the chilly, dark forest, her only lament was that she could no longer enjoy the hunt.

Her soul was no longer her own. Her emotions were the price she paid for her power. She no longer had the capacity to love or hate, to feel joy or sorrow. She had bought this power merely to kill her would-be murderer. But in exchange, she could no longer take happiness in his death.

But the deed was done. There was no taking back a bargain of one's soul. The girl made her way alone into the night, forevermore one with the shadows.
