"Hey have you ever wondered how small little creatures fight against big ones?" The first announcer asked, likely to the other.

"Hmmm... You mean like those little bugs that bite back? You know... little things. Bites, sometimes poison. What would you do if you were small being picked on a huge human? Poor critters."

"Well, lets reverse that then. Lets make the bugs big and the people small!" As if on cue, both sets of combatants appeared. One side was the guild of Galas'nor, Lyolf, Sophie, and Ryine. The other were three very large creatures.

"When they get that big, I lose my sympathy for them." The lady announcer dressed in the ball-gown shivered. A moment later the arena changed. The floor started turning dark and an almost obsidian-like color. Then suddenly flames burst forth from the very floor burning each of the combatants. Even the two ravens who had perched on their owner's shoulders were singed from the attack.

"Barbecued snake might taste good." The first announcer said off handedly.

"The snake's probably thinking the same thing. Except it's about barbecued humans..." She grimaced.

QuoteFire arena rules:
  • At the beginning of each round, you are burned for 1d6 damage.
  • No fire spawns at the center of the room (4 by 4 square), and is the only safe place for those touching land.
  • The square of no fire changes position at the beginning of each round.
  • Flying at least 10 ft. up will negate the effect of fire.

The overgrown monsters wasted no time as they rushed towards the party, flames licking at their hides. The burning hurt the monsters, each one wailing an otherwordly sounding scream as they focused on their new prey. The centipede lashed out, while the spider spat out some sticky goo, though Ryine was able to deftly dodge the attac. The spider, the slowest of them all managed to close the gap.

QuoteCentipede:Move 40 ft. S then attack Uli and misses.
Spider: Move 30ft S, then throw webbing at Ryine and missed.
Snake: Move 20 ft S, then 20 ft S again.

"Small against large, eh?" The fighter chuckled.

"Just remember that even the smallest of animals can bare their fangs when threatened!" The man lets out a shout as he brings his sword down on the nearest monster and his shield lets out a growl as it attempts to bite the same target.

Spoiler
Attacking snake with Longsword of Frost, using a free action to have the Lion's shield do the same, and spending 3 Karma to take another swing with the longsword. Then taking a 5 foot step into G 10.

HP: 12/17

"Talk about a rough start..." Lyolf finally managed to squeeze out of his tortured lungs, all the while struggling not to be fried in this elf-frying abyss the tournament designers obviously created to specifically fry elves with. However, no matter the conditions, no matter how many trials that come his way. enemies he must face, frying pans he must conquer, Lyolf was not a member of Galas'nor just for show. He, along with every other member of the esteemed guild were adventurers held in the highest regard in the city. For each member possessed no small amount of power in their own right and when fighting together as allies, there were few as reliable. Even now, when suddenly thrown into such a environment, he kept his calm, and began making out his companion's locations in the vicinity-a well cooked Ryine a mere 5 feet to his right and a burnt Sophie not far behind.

How reliable.

That aside, it seemed as if the tournament designers had gone all-out with this year's battle's preparation, not just in the arena layout but with their choice in monster teams as well. "Team Overgrowth," as they were called in the tournament listings, were little more than over-sized vermin. Of course, in a situation such as this...

size amounted to quite a lot.

Already, Lyolf had to crane his neck far up to even see his opponents: a brutal centipede, a murderous spider, and a deadly snake-each the size of a barn. Simply standing firm in such an inhospitable landscape was difficult enough, let alone fighting a trio of large, vicious monsters straight from a nightmare. And as he stood there, bathed in fire and facing three monsters true to their name, he almost felt as if he were losing touch with reality. The entire encounter felt surreal, as if this really were a nightmare and he the dreamer. Yet, despite the horrors now confronting him, what surprised him most was neither the nightmarish monsters nor the shifting arena-it was himself.

Perhaps his most recent experiences had deadened his nerves to such feelings or perhaps his trust in his companions had grown, but whatever the reason, as he was now he felt no fear. It astounded him, and before he even realized it, a piece of cured leather lay in the palm of one hand, a flaming sword in the other. A soft azure glow then began emanating from the leather in his hand and a spell came unbidden to his lips.

His instructors at the Magic Academy had often berated him on this very thing before: innate spell-casting. For all mages possessed various amounts of magical power, building corresponding levels of arcane pressure within them. Amongst those with a surplus of such energy, magic would often leak through spells cast unwittingly, as the energy sought it's escape into the world around it. But this was held amongst the highest of taboos. Magic was dangerous, or so it was believed. That was why many well-trained wizards and sorcerers devoted their lives into mastering the elements, to impose such a fine degree of control as to make such an escape impossible.

-But Lyolf never did complete his training.

It didn't take him long to understand the intent behind his own actions, however, and as he clasped the leather in his hand, the azure glow deepened. He then began tracing invisible lines in the air, and as he did so a familiar pain found itself throbbing in his forehead. "You never do get used to this," he murmered, as he grit his teeth and continued.

-For unlike traditional magi, an outcast magus such as he was made to explore the depths of magic unguided. But perhaps that was why he, unlike the average magus, can use his magic so freely.

By now, the lines were leaving a shimmering afterglow, creating a faint outline of the form he had envisioned, and shedding a small, clashing azure light in an otherwise hellish landscape.

-For without the fetters of learned practice binding him, Lyolf casts magic in its primal form, as it was originally meant to be.

It was then that he realized. First when faced with those skeletons, then again against the turkeys, against the hobgoblins, and against every other significant foe he had faced since, he had already done this in the past. Countless times.

"Then, as before..." he muttered with a pained grin. His power reached its peak; the pain intensified, and with it, so too did the glow.

"Magus... R?s!"

Actions

Lyolf casts Mage Armor (standard action) as well as Shield (standard action) via karma. Additionally, he draws his flaming shortsword (move action).
Meanwhile, Uli flies skyward, out of reach of the flames.

No.

Nope.

Nuh-uh.

No. Way.

The usual talkative and friendly Sophie made no sound, not even a peep.
She couldn't even move.

Was this some sort of sick joke? Had she specifically been brought to this hell on earth as some form of entertainment? Surely the deities above were laughing right now. The maid wasn't even sure what to do. Run away? Curl up like an armadillo on the blistering arena floor?then cry?  She held her chest then, trying to calm her racing heart. Sophie had a nearly crippling fear of spiders ? The other large creatures before them weren't exactly on her favorites list, either.

Flashback pls

?Wow! It looks like my parents haven?t touched this playhouse in years.? A small, 7 year old Sophie stood before a dusty old shed. She wore a tattered dress and old sandals. ?Look at this, Mimic! Such a huge lock! What do you think they are hiding?? Little Sophie questioned, her small hands playing with the lock. She had found the little shed while picking corn in the fields. The raven sat at nearby, just watching. Although the two had become friends, actually communicating wasn't as easy at the time. ?Okay, I have been working for a bazillion minutes! I think its ok to take a break, don?t you Mimic?? By a bazillion minutes, she really meant 5.

Sophie slowly walked around the shed, looking for some way in. ?Ooh, a window?!? The window had become so old, and so dusty, it was impossible to see inside. Sophie reached up, but found her short self unable to bridge the gap. ?I can do this!? She said with a look of determination. Jumping as high as she could, Sophie was able to take hold of the window sill?s edge. ?Uwah..!? She hung from it for a moment, using all of her strength to pull herself up. The wood creaked beneath her weight, the young girl?s knees becoming covered in dust.

Sophie rubbed the window with the bottom of her dress, finding it nearly impossible to remove the grime that had developed. She then started pushing at the edges, doing her best to open it the proper way. She couldn?t tell if it was locked, or just stuck. ?Maybe if I just?? With one hard push, the entire window fell inside?as did Sophie. ?Ow ow ow!!? Crashing to the ground Sophie sat and whined, having scraped her knee. ?Mimic!! I got a boo-boo!? Sniffling, Sophie took in her surroundings, the only light source being from the opening she?d just created. It was still dark, though. ?W-what?s that???  Little Sophie rubbed a tear from her eye, suddenly intrigued by a black mass in the corner of the shed. She carefully crawled toward it, her tiny hand reaching out. Was this what her mommy and daddy had been hiding?

??.?WAAAAAAH!!!?

The moment she poked it, Sophie knew she had made a grave mistake. What seemed like thousands of tiny spiders began to panic and separate ? The tiny, horrifying creatures nearly covered the shed, many crawling up Sophie?s arms and legs. She cried out, and scrambled to her feet in a panic. She tried climbing back out the window, but found herself once again unable to reach. ?Get off!!? She screeched, nearly covered in spiders. As if on que, the shed door burst open, Sophie?s father rushing inside. He scooped the small girl up in his arms, brushing a few of the arachnids from her hair. Little Sophie began to bawl.

?Here ya go.? Her father said, suddenly dropping her into the shallow end of a pond. ?P-papa!!!? Sophie cried. The remaining spiders began to drown. Tiny red marks covered Sophie?s arms, legs, and face. Although they weren't poisonous, the spiders sure knew how to bite! Sophie looked up at her father, as he looked down at her, his arms crossed. Oh, Sophie knew, she was grounded.

A familiar beak poked at the maid?s cheek. ?Calm down, Sophie.? Mimic soothed. ?Don?t let your fellow human creatures down? Also, it?s really hot, so ?? Mimic flew upward, unable to handle the heat.  Sophie would have to go on without his friendly nudges.

The maid slowed her breathing, trying with all her might to suppress the terrible memories. However, she quickly found her ability to do so sinking as the large spider moved toward them. ?Come on Sophie, MOVE.? Mimic prodded from above, afraid his dearest maid would get mauled while being frozen in fear.  Unable to think past her panic, Sophie made an attempt to cast sanctuary. At least she?d be able to hide in her little bubble.

Spoiler

-Mimic flies up 10 ft.
-Sophie Casts sanctuary
