Location: Town Center

"Glad you could make it,"
Said Garron the large half-dwarf as he slammed down another five-foot cubed hay bale in a stack. You can see several of these stacks all around the open space that had been cordoned off for the maze. At the center of it all was a large pile of mechanics and scrap that could be used for the building of the various hazards. Some may think that the local warden was opening up a junkyard as a side business if they did not know about his plans for a hay dungeon.

"I think this should be enough for all the walls,"
he said stepping back to admire his handwork. "I think I have all the basics, but I'm glad to have more heads and hands designing and building the challenges. We want to see what these kids can do!"

Virgil walks up gives the man a big smile as he surveys the hay walls. He speaks up in his deep slow southern drawl. "That is a mighty fine maze you got goin' on here. I had a few ideas to help you out and I have a few days before I go out on patrol. If'n you didn't mind, of course." He picks a particularly fine straw of hay and breaks it down a bit to about 6 inches long and places it in the side of his mouth. He turns around and turns his attention the pile in the middle. "I'm thinkin' a little pressure plate with a scarecrow or fake monster attached. Because who doesn't enjoy a little jump scare every now and then, right?" He gives a slight chuckle to himself as he turns around to face Garren. "I'll get started right away. I'm gonna be going through here to see what I can use so if'n ya needed somethin' ya might wanna grab it."

Through the three days of labor, Virgil and Garron had been spending a lot of time together with the help of a few other villagers. Virgil was responsible for most of the technical aspects were as Garron handled most of the heavy lifting and safety. It was on the third day that the older half-dwarf came up to the raccoon man holding a waterskin after a long time out in the sun.

"You know, watching you work the last few days, I'm glad thalia managed to find you, Virgil, you hand far too much talent to waste it being a bandit," Said Garron handing him the waterskin. "Watching you work for the little kids like this is heartwarming."

A raven comes to sit on a nearby hay wall kawing as it picked at any loose strands.

Virgil takes the skin and takes a long drink before handing it back. "I did some other work here and there but yeah that was the majority of it. Sadly, it's easy money with the right pickings." He rubs the scars on his face for a moment. "There are a few hazards that come along with it. I'm glad to have a second chance. I grew up in a same village, not too different from this one. Though, I reckon we had more cattle and wheat then what y'all grow. But I remember life being slow and boring. It's good to do something to make them smile." He stands there quietly as he looks off seeing a group of kids playing. His smile fades a bit as he thinks to himself.  "Besides, I've paid enough for my past. It's nice to do something different for a change."

Garron slapped Virgil on the back as he laughed, "I sometimes wish this town was quieter if I was honest. I'm the one who has to go around making sure that our goddess doesn't get in trouble with the merchants that pass through. At least this place has kept me young and sharp. Being the warden for such a small town means that normally I wouldn't see much action outside of the occasional bandit or goblin attacking."

"If you ever feel like you are gonna get the itch again, feel free to come to me and I promise you a free drink. I always enjoy having someone to drink with and I am always free to talk to."

Virgil lurches forward from the impact from the large man and winces slightly. "I 'preciate the offer. It weren't never really an itch. You know how young men can be. I got bored and left home soon as I was old enough to be called a man. Traveled around a bit and just kind of fell in with the wrong crowd. The money was good but they became a family. People like to think bandits are all cutthroats but it isn't always that way. I knew someone who always sent some of his money back home to help his parents farm." He plucks a particularly fine piece of hay and places the end in his mouth. He turns to face Garron as he leans back against the hay wall. "That's what I stayed for. They were my family. They took me in, taught me how to take care of myself and then... Well, in the end I s'pose it doesn't matter. This is my family now. I don't think you have to worry about me robbing people along the road." He lets out a hefty laugh as he gets up and walks past the man. "I will take you up on that drink sometime, though."

"You have a good head on your shoulders, Virgil, and Thalia thinks the world of you. So as far as I'm concerned you're family. After all, in this town it's the bonds you make are just as thick as blood if not thicker. So just know you never have to face any of your problems alone, I find loneliness just ruins any good drink." Garron smiled with a look in his eye that said he was studying Virgil. Looking past the man in front of him, in a warm way that was meant to feel comforting. As if Virgil was an actual son or grandson.

"Now then, let's just get this work done, and then we can see about how to reward you for the work you put in."
