Title: [IC] New Years Festival: Archery Contest
Post by: Throndir on June 02, 2015, 10:08:36 AM
4:00 PM

At the edge of the town, right outside the eastern gates was a gathering of people. All sorts of individuals with bows, or crossbows waiting in line, as small targets were left far out into the fields beyond.

"Welcome friends! I'll be hosting this year's Archery Contest." The man speaking was Flanders. You recognized him as one of the shopkeepers in town.

"The rules are simple. Shoot the targets from 150 ft. away!" He gestured further out to a target around 150 ft. away. "The target consists of three main areas. The center worth the most at four points, the middle ring, two points, with the outer ring the least amount of points at just a single point."

"Those who are tied, will have another attempt to break it!"

For those who just want to jump in, and roleplay later. Go ahead and copy paste this below in a response:

Walking through town, Ryine was a bit discouraged after being unable to find more of the items he was looking for in the scavenger hunt. That is when he noticed a crowd of people gathered around with a bunch of ranged weapons. It was't his forte, but he did have a short bow that he carried with him in case the need to use it arose. After waiting his turn, and watching many other archers launching their arrows, it was finally his turn. The warrior approached the line, drew his short bow and pulled out an arrow. He carefully took aim and fired.

attack!

Shortbow @ 150 feet = 3 range increments.

"An archery contest..." Markus ponders as he thoughtfully taps his trusty crossbow. "I'll take part in the competition!" he shouts as he makes his way to the front of the crowd. Markus loads a bolt and takes aim patiently before sending the projectile hurdling at the target.

Garrin Ravenhorst

An actual festival had begun sweeping through town, so everyone at the Guild was celebrating even more than normal, something that Garrin didn't believe to be possible. A lot of the events didn't tickle his fancy, but the archery contest seemed like something appropriate for him. It was always good to test your martial prowess.

Ryine stood there admiring his shot, it was a bit better than he was expecting. He began to walk away from the target, glad that he could still hit it. But as he started to leave, one of the townsfolk called out to him. "SIR! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU HAVE FOUR MORE ARROWS!"
Ryine laughed along with the other participants as he walked back to take his other four shots. "I guess I do!"

Wolfrin Fenris

Exiting the general store, Wolfrin began heading for the city gate and back to his forest abode. The day was nice, the sun was shining, and Wolfrin had decided to treat himself that night, buying a few spices he had been unable to grow himself. He planned on making a wondrous, certainly by his standards, meal for himself and Buddy if his friend so desired some.

Unusually for him, he was alone, without his large wolf companion loping at his side and making the townsfolk rather nervous. Buddy was out hunting, finding the meat portion for the meal tonight. Though he doubted the Wolf understood why he always cooked the meat, Buddy was very good about bringing his smaller conquests back to camp to share with him; for the larger he simply led Wolfrin to the carcass. As a rule Wolfrin refused to kill any animal, but he had no intention of preventing his companion from following his instinctual urges, and he had no qualms about sharing the meat once the deed had been done, though he never encouraged Buddy to hunt.

As he walked along enjoying the day and thinking of the meal he would prepare, he couldn't help but hear the festivities around him. Men and women and children frolicked through the streets. In various areas there were stands and tents set up, offering games for the children and contests of strength and intellect for the adults. There was a buzz in the city, and although large crowds of people made Wolfrin uncomfortable, he could recognize and appreciate the sound of a city at play; a merry day indeed.

As he passed one such area, he heard the twang of bowstrings being released just before the roar, or good-natured laughter, of the crowd accompanied. Feeling the weight of his bow on his shoulder, he decided to see what type of archery contest this was. He listened to the man hosting the contest, a local fletcher by the name of Flanders if he wasn't mistaken, explain the rules as he watched a few contestants take their shots. He even recognized a few guild members, though he knew them by sight only. Although the crowds were slightly off putting, and he was never one for being the center of attention, the warmth of the sun and the general merriment of the crowd overcame his usual shyness and he approached Flanders.

He received the five arrows, which were of such fine make that Wolfrin made a mental note to visit the man's shop in the future, and entered the line. After watching many contestants take their shots he finally made his way to the forefront and readied himself, calming his heartbeat and breathing. As he had been taught he took each shot quickly, one following the next with no pause; a single fluid motion of nocking the arrow, drawing fletchings to ear, and releasing.

Spoiler
Wolfrin uses Alanas Memoir to make the shots. Not calculating range increment penalties if there are any.

Nomblilin was wondering around the festival taking in the sights and sounds of the festival when he noticed a large crowd start to gather. "Archery eh I was never a bad shot with a bow. Maybe I should test my luck and take a few shots. Hell I might even win!" Nomblilin started to grin with excitement. He chatted away with people around him in line until he got his chance to his skills.

Aion drew the string of a longbow he had borrowed from a nearby guildmate. He didn't typically carry these on him, but not for lack of training. He figured he'd buy one after this, since it did feel good to knock an arrow back every once and awhile. The range was far, but being able to bend time had its advantages. With a few shrugs and jumps back and forth, filled with excitement, he was ready to take his five shots. He gave a friendly nod to all the other guild members there before letting loose.

QuoteAnyone who posted above can make some last minute spell casts before the fight, if you have any to increase attack rolls.

This bumped Aion up to a perfect score with Guidance, and Nombilin's score with Inspire Courage.

Braxton looked the other guild members over, tilting his head upon hearing such high scores being announced. He seemed to be nodding slowly with approval as each one knocked an arrow loose. Eventually he seemed to decide something and stormed up to take his place silently. The huge man pulled a bow off his back, so tiny in comparison to his arms that it looked like it would snap the instant he pulled the string. It bent uncomfortably, any archers in the crowd who saw would feel deeply sorry for that poor bow, being forced to bend for a man who would be much better suited to a greatsword

Jin

Drawing his newly acquired composite longbow, Jin carefully eyed a most worthy foe-the archery target. Already, his fellow guild-mates had fired away at their respective targets with practiced accuracy, making short work of the monstrous entities. In Jin's case, however, he merely stared at the befoul presence ahead with an intensity that could shatter glass, break solid waffles, raise the dead, and even grant sight of his target.

He was not an avid fan of the ranged arts after all, instead preferring the feel of his sword in close, "honorable" combat; so what was he to do when his opponent lay a good 150 ft away?

The answer was simple.

He just needed the proper arrows.
http://www.youtube.com/v/G5W1ic8FyKU&autoplay=1
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/122814910/Jin/TheProperArrow.png)
[close]

Thus, with his armament set, Jin drew the first sword from his quiver and notched his bow. He then lined up his shot with some aid from the gloves that had mysteriously formed atop his fingers and let fly one incarnum-powered "arrow" after another.

Actions

Jin uses Rapid Meldshaping to replace his Lightning Gauntlets soulmeld with Sighting Gloves and immediately reallocates 2 essentia, formerly assigned to the Lightning Gauntlets, into the new soulmeld. He then makes the 5 attacks with a composite longbow.

Lyolf

When mortals first discovered magic, great changes swept across the world: Items of wondrous power were forged, great cities were raised, and lives were altogether changed for the better. For with magic's coming, great advancements were made in medication, agriculture, and countless other fields. What was previously untreatable could now be cured with a simple incantation and whatever crop withered and died could instantly be raised anew amidst a light-show of arcane power.

Likewise, when Ki came under mortal knowledge, another wave of change once more encompassed the globe. Though the changes this time were of a more subtle nature, they were by no means any less significant. After all, the many practitioners of the ancient art were known to experience far greater longevity than their peers, with some reputably becoming immortals through their mastery of the arts.

Either way, ever since the world's inhabitants were introduced to the wonders of magic and ki, they have always strived to combine the two into a greater whole. For it was common belief that magic and ki were both incomplete arts and only by fusing the two can one reach true mastery. Thus, there were many that had aspired to mix the two elements that were akin to oil and water in miscibility. Naturally, few had ever succeeded

...and Lyolf was among them.

Actions

Lyolf begins by casting Cat's Grace to increase his dexterity by 4 for a grand total of 40 rounds. That done, he uses 1 point from his Arcane Pool to enhance his longbow by +1 for 10 rounds. Then by expending 1 point from his Ki Pool (Recasting once more after the duration of the first has ended), he proceeds to activate the stalker art Murderous Insight to roll twice for attack rolls and take the better result for 4 rounds each cast. Finally, he makes the 5 attacks with his longbow.  (Total Expenditure: 1 Arcane Point and 2 Ki Points)

Late posters may still roll to get the 200 exp until the final closure of this RP. However even if you score high or a score of 20, will not be considered for the prizes.
Due to the very large show up, I'll change up the rules a slight bit to include more winners.
  • Two winners for each placement. Eg 2 first place winners, 2 second place winners, 2 third place winners.
  • 3 more winners who didn't win above for post quality/good roleplaying. They'll win the 3rd place reward. Feel free to post again in here if you're aiming for this one. Simply rewrite your roleplay post above (post a new response so I know when its edited), or go off of the results. Any extended roleplaying should be placed in the Tales of the Guild section though.
  • This good-roleplaying reward above does not replace the end-of-game RP awards through voting, so you might still at least get some more exp.

"Amazing! Three contestants having straight bulls-eyes!" Flanders exclaimed. "Not to mention more than a couple of ties." Flandes proceeded to signal some men in the distance, and you watched as they took the targets and started moving them further out. The target now stood 250 ft. away.

Wolfrin, Aion, Lyolf, Ryine, Iiro, Nyuko roll 5 times again.

Please mention if you include ranged penalties. The target is 250 ft. away this time. Also mention what ranged weapon you are using.

Aion looked around at the other two men to either side with a satisfied expression. He looked just short of crying out of happiness that he'd done so good and made it this far. With a deep, calming breath he drew his bow once more. The warrior's eyes honed in on the distant, distant target, examining all the possible futures for the best angle. It all came intuitively from years of training, with barely a thought drifting in his head. He began pulling the string ba-

"Hey can I have my bow back?" The ranger he'd borrowed the weapon from chimed with his hand outstretched for it.

Aion dropped the weapon in a panic, stumbling back and tripping over a rock, slamming himself down hard on his head. As the whole crowd stared at him, he felt the entire world stop and slide back a few moments. He was pulling the string back, but stopped. Aion turned and smiled at the man brightly.

"Just a few more moments, please." He asked the ranger, who gave him a sideways look before slinking off a few feet away, arms crossed.

The shaman couldn't help but chuckle, and tried to hold it in. The tension was insane and that had totally broken it for him. He sighed and decided to take the moment to cast another spell or three, as well as use a small leftover from his paladin training. This felt different. It wasn't concentration, or a need, or a desire to win. It was pure, true confidence.

Callista Fae

Although she had a crossbow, Callista found herself using other methods of attack in battle. She would have skipped the archery competition, but hey, it might be a good idea to see how well she could shoot after not practicing much for a while. It would be better to try it here and fail than end up having to use it in battle and fail. Thus, the little faerie enlarged her body into her child-size form and grabbed the crossbow. Stepping up to the line, she shot her first arrow.

"Ha! Bullseye!" She called with glee, then quickly shot again. Her second shot was a disappointment, almost failing to hit the target. Perhaps she had gotten to cocky with that first hit. Pausing to steady her aim, she shot again, this time not only hitting bullseye, but splitting the first arrow.

"Yes! Haha!" She cried out again. Once again too excited about her lucky hit, she failed to take the time to steady her aim for her fourth shot. It seemed she would need every other shot to remind her that she should pause to take time and not let her excitement get to her...

Aion exhaled deeply. This was really coming down to the wire. Fortunately all the spells he cast had decent enough duration to allow for 5 more shots at the shortest, but a few of them could last for twenty-five more shots. Still, as he squinted into the distance to see his shrinking target, he deeply doubted his own ability to land the marks. All compunctions about using magic had flown out the window when he noticed that his opponent was pulling out as many tricks as him. And even though Aion knew that there were two first place winners, he needed to defeat his enemy for other reasons.

What was magic, but the extension of one's own ki? After all, magic ran circuits around the world in a manner not too dissimilar to the circulation of ki within one's body. It was an energy as unique and mysterious to elf and man as personal hygiene was to dwarf and orc, however that did not mean it was impossible to control-only more difficult. Like ki, magic was formed directly from one's will to suit whatever needs were required.

And now that "need" involved hitting a target 350 feet away.

Lyolf let out a quiet sigh, as he once more pulled the drawstring taut and let his consciousness delve within the deep mysteries of both the mind and the body. He had always been curious in finding the limits of his own strength, but was never provided with a suitable excuse to do so. However, with the onset of this archery contest, with arrows flying and targets moving progressively further and further into the distance, now...

Now, he finally had his excuse.

Actions

For the sake of some ever-glorious overkill, using all remaining Ki and Arcane points to not only provide the same bonuses as before, but also to do so while powered by True Strike.

"Unbelievable!" Flanders was gawking at the perfect scores each of the final two combatants were doing. The competition continued to venture even further. With each time Flanders thinking of ways to make the event harder, or even more spectacular. But for whatever reason, the two competitors, Lyolf and Aion, continued to hit their mark with uncanny accuracy. It was unbelievable. Yet it was amazing, and even godly. Flanders balked in amazement, as the audience too became more enamored with the two archers.

When at first some of the audience had began chanting the names of either Lyolf or Aion in a frantic chant, as the rounds continued to get harder, that tone changed to chanting 'Galas'nor' over and over. When at last Flanders had run out of ideas to make the archery competition even more challenging, he threw up his hands and declared both to be the winners of this year's Archery Contest.

Never before in the history of the festival had there been two winners, and the audience exploded in cheer.

Forcefully closing this. Will be giving everyone their exp, as well as magical items earned.

First Place: Lyolf and Aion. Earning 500 exp, 10 New Years Festival Competition points, and a random Greater Minor Wondrous Item.
Second Place: Wolfrin and Nyuko. Earning 400 exp, 8 New Years Festival Competition points, and a random Lesser Minor Wondrous Item (random roll twice, receives higher item).
Third Place: Iiro and Ryine. Earning 300 exp, 6 New Years Festival Competition points, and a random Lesser Minor Wondrous Item.

Everyone else gets 200 exp for participating.
