Title: Chapter 2A - The Jewels of Beenleigh
Post by: pringerbeam on February 19, 2017, 04:46:26 PM
Annalise Schwartz and Ilsa Raisch

As the day dawns one spring morning each of you recieves a letter.  Sealed with wax, the letter bears a crest.  Upon opening the letter you find the following written.  You are invited to join the Blackwatch Association.  If you are interested in learning more of this association or in joining, you are invited to tea with Lord Blackblade of Lancaster at the Blackwatch Association's clubhouse in London this afternoon at three o'clock.  You find the address to the clubhouse written at the bottom of the note.

The morning was peaceful, Annalise was in her study poring over some papers and enjoying her morning tea, a habit she had picked up since coming to London. Her family back in Potsdam were coffee drinkers, and that trait had been passed down to her. There was a gentle knock on her door, and before she could respond it opened.

Her most loyal servant, Jonathan was at the door with a letter in hand. "Annalise, you've got post, just the one letter today." He approached the desk and set the letter down in the corner. "Would you like some more tea?"

"That would be swell, Jonathan, And thank you for bringing the post." He nodded and left the room as swiftly as he had come. "I shall return shortly."

She read over the letter, she hadn't the faintest idea of who this Lord Blackblade of Lancaster fellow was, but it was a chance to learn something new. Perhaps this association could be a benefactor in future endeavors or provide a connection that would provide some sort of benefit in her pursuit of knowledge.

As Annalise finished reading the letter, Jonathan returned with a new cup of tea. "Thank you Jonathan, I've an additional task for you. The letter that arrived is from a Lord Blackblade of Lancaster. He has interest in introducing me to the Blackwatch Association. I've no idea why he knows of me, or what he believes I can provide but I'd like to accept the invitation. If you could arrange transportation and accompany me to this meeting, it would be most appreciated. It is at the hour of three,"

"As you wish, Annalise. I shall make arrangements and inform any that wish to meet with you this afternoon or this evening that you shall be away."

"Thank you, as always Jonathan. You make life here much easier. I shall excuse myself and make preparations for the coming hour." Anna rose from the desk and left the study with a short bow to Jonathan. She then returned to her bedroom to prepare an outfit appropriate for the occasion. A blue evening gown with black trim, and a silver brooch inlaid with sapphires. A simple silver hairpin added as decoration as she decided to just wear her hair straight.

Transportation arrived with ample time to reach the address that was provided. Annalise and Jonathan stepped out of the carriage with fifteen minutes to spare. A lady should never be late, after all.

You find yourself in a busy part of town.  Businesses and their patrons buzz with activity and commerce.  You come to the appointed address: a four story brick building much like its neighbors.  The building would be unidentifiable if it were not for a gleaming new brass plaque next to the door.
The Blackwatch Association
Private Property
No Solicitation

A simple brass knocker adorns the door, awaiting use.

After identifying the building in question, Annalise approached it, letter in hand. She gripped the brass knocker, and proceeded to tap it on the door three times.

Ilsa sat on the far end of the bar at a nameless public house that sat nestled between two derelict looking buildings on a cramped street in the London slums. The letter she had been delivered remained unopened, the pristine wax seal with its ornate crest peered back mockingly. Her travel funds were nearly spent, and the thought of asking her family to send enough money to make a return journey to Zurich stung mildly.

She took a drink, and swallowed.

"There's no harm in opening it I suppose..."

The short letter inside perplexed her. Unfamiliar with the aristocracy in London, she had never heard of this "Blackblade of Lancaster" so the name meant nothing. What troubled her was why some member of the social elite knew her name, and what this Engländer could possibly want from her.

She looked at the clock, it was five minutes to noon.

Folding the letter carefully back into its envelope and stuffing it into her breast pocket, she emptied her tankard and rose to her feet then slung her rifle (carefully wrapped in padded cloth) over her shoulder. She fished her wallet from her other pocket and tossed three pence onto the bar by the glass. She knew she had overpaid for her drink, but it was a minor annoyance. "Confound the English and their stupid currency."

Exiting the bar she began to wander toward the center of the city, mulling the offer listed in the letter over. Finally she decided that she might as well meet with the man, lest he decide to send the constabulary after her for whatever reason. With about three hours before the stated meeting time, she would be able to find the building regardless of her unfamiliarity with London's busy and winding streets.

Annalise
You are greeted at the door by an ogre dressed in the uniform of a butler.  He looks you and Jonathan over and you notice an ever so slight sign of relief on his face.  "Ah, you must be Dame Schwartz.  It is Dame yes?  I am not entirely versed in the titles of your homeland and would be agast if I should offend with an improper title."  The butler moves aside and allows you entry into the building.  "If you would like your manservant to be kept at your side you are welcome to.  The servant work does not require his aid, but we can arrange a place for him to await you during your tea should you so desire."

Ilsa
Despite the unfamiliarity with the street of London you are able to find the address eventually, arriving ever so slightly before the appointed time.  You find a woman and what appears to be her servant a the front door speaking with another servant.

"Greetings, sir. Dame or Lady would be swell. May I ask for your name? I appreciate your offer, and if Jonathan could accompany me that would be fantastic. He is the most dependable fellow I've encountered thus far," Annalise bowed to the ogre. She hadn't seen too many of t hem yet in her stay in London, but she thought that they were quite a fascinating species. Her family only had human servants, so seeing someone of a different species serving the house was intriguing to her.

"I am Carlson, personal butler to Lord Blackblade, Dame Schwartz."  He bows slightly at this.  "If you would like, Lord Blackblade awaits you in the main hall, straight back through those doors."  He motions down the short hallway to a set of double doors.  "We apoligize for the poor furnishings, the buidling has only recently been purchased and has yet to be set in proper order."

Ilsa hesitated for a moment, watching the woman and her attendant speak with the large servant that emerged from the front door. She looked wealthy, stirring up the feeling yet again that coming here might have been a mistake.

After a moment the large servant ushered the pair inside, now would be the last chance to turn around and leave. Ilsa shook her head slightly, disagreeing with the notion of running away. "Was denkst du wird davon werden?" <<What do you think of it?>> she said to the empty air beside her and waited for its reply. "Ja, es gibt nicht viel zu verlieren. Lass uns gehen." <<Yes, there is not much to lose. Let's go.>> she said after a moment of silence, and stepped up to the large servant.

"Guten Tag... Errr, Good afternoon."

"Thank you for your hospitality, Carlson. I shall meet with Lord Blackblade straight away. Care to join me, Jonathan, or would you rather wait in another area?" Annalise stepped through the threshold of the building, thinking to herself that there was no turning back now.

She followed Carlson's instructions before emerging into the main hall.

Annalise
"I will stay at your side m'lady.  One never knows when one might be needed." Jonathan follows you to the main hall, stepping ahead only to open one of the doors before you.  The hall itself is massive, more akin to a courtyard than a room.  Skylights illuminate the hall which rises all the way to the roof of the building, sunlight reflecting off the polished marble floors.  The room seems even more massive for the lack of furniture.  A single dining table is set for tea, an island among the emptiness of the room.  Seated in a large chair is a massive ogre, sipping a cup of tea and watching the floating motes of dust dance in the sunbeams.  Hearing the echoes of the door opening he lookes over to you.  "Ah yes, do come over, tea is ready!"

Ilsa
The butler looks at you, his eyes drawn to your wrapped gun.  "Ah, then that would make you madam Raisch?  Do come in. his lordship is waiting.  May I take your package?"

Annalise gave Jonathan a quick thanks as she stepped into the main hall. Her eyes wandered the room with wonder. She was a lady of a well to do family, but the size and build of the room was impressive to say the least. The voice of the ogre brought her out of the trance-like state she had entered admiring the architecture, and her hard steps echoed throughout the hall as she approached the tea island.

With a courtesy, Annalise greeted the ogre. "I am to presume that you are Lord Blackblade of Lancaster? It is a pleasure to meet you, though I know not why I have been summoned. She took a seat across from the ogre. "Regardless of the circumstances that have brought me here, I am pleased by your invitation and look forward to learning about your association this afternoon."

Ilsa tightened her grip on the strap over her shoulder. "I would prefer not, but I assume it was not a request. It is an item of terrible importance to me, do treat it well." With that, she removed the carefully wrapped rifle from her shoulder and handed it to the butler hesitating to release it for just a moment.

She then removed her hat, folding it carefully and tucked it in a side pocket on her coat.

"Your master is through the door, ja?

[info]Assuming that Carlson says yes and lets her go on, Ilsa will follow after the other woman and her servant into the main hall.[/info]

Ilsa
Carlson takes your gun and, upon getting a grip on it, realizes its nature.  He suddenly seems ot take greater care with the weapon, as if afraid he might set it off with improper handeling.  "Ah, yes madam.  He is right through there.  You may have your... package... returned upon leaving.  My name is Carlson, personal butler to Lord Blackblade, should you need anything."

Annalise
"Yes I am Lord Blackblade of Lancaster,  It is a pleasure to meet you my lady."  He rises from his seat to take your hand and kneel, still managing to have to look down at you despite this.  "Please, have something to eat.  Carlson makes an excellent cucumber sandwich.  Ah, and it would seem out other guest has arrived.  Do come and  have a seat."  He moves to pull out a chair for you and the newly arrived Ilsa.

After waiting for you both to have a seat he sits in the chair sized for himself.  "I'm sure you have many questions so let me begin with the organization itself.  I have decided to found an association of like-minded individuals who wish to do something better for this world.  Things have become increasingly chaotic in the world and I hope to do something to help.  That is why I have newly founded the Blackwatch Association, to help fight the things that lurk in the shadows, and I was hoping that you two might be its first true members."

Before taking her offered seat Ilsa gave a short bow to the man she presumed to be Lord Blackblade and the well dressed woman.

Aristocrat. She surmised.

"Herr Blackblade, und Dame."

She took her seat and rested her hands on her knee the fingers intertwined, then listened very closely to Blackblade's explanation for calling her here. When he was finished speaking she paused for moment to consider his words before speaking.

"When you say... help...?"  She left the question unfinished, its meaning implicit then spoke again quickly. "This may be out of turn as well, but as you are likely aware I am an officer in my country's military. My superiors might find that one of their Wachtmeister, excuse me, Sergeants belonging to an organization operated by a foreign national to be problematic."

Annalise sat in the seat offered to her.  She listened to the explanation of the association provided by Blackblade and the commentary of the other guest before speaking herself. "Your organization sounds interesting, sir." She paused a moment, and came to the realization that she had not introduced herself to the other guest, nor Blackblade himself.

"My apologies, I've been rude. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Annalise Schwarz, I hail from the fair city of Potsdam and have left my motherland seeking education at the fine university of Oxford. I'm not aware of what benefits a student such as myself can offer your organization, Sir Blackblade, but I must admit I do find the prospect of such an organization quite intriguing. I know not of these dangers that lurk in the shadows, but if you think that I may be of assistance, I shall give it a go. Though, I do have a question for you, Sir. What do you mean by first true members? Have you contacted others before us?"

"I have tried to recruit others but they have been... lacking.  I will not lie to you, this organization will take you to the darkest corners of our world.  I have seen many falter agaisnt the forces of the maelificum.  I only hope you don't falter yoiurselves.  You may refuse if you don't think yourselves up to the task.  I would never ask you to abandon any duties you may already have and if you fear your ties will weigh you down then it might be best if you return to your lives as if you had never come here.  One never knows where evil lies and corruption can find its way into the very hearts of nations.  I would not wish to ask you to betray your nations but someday I may not have a choice.  Order must triumph over chaos and the price might be too great for you to bear."

Annalise listened to his exposition, fingers locked and hands resting on her lap. As he finished, she took a sip of her tea and thought a few moments before responding. "With all due respect Sir Blackblade, I've no clue what you see in one such as myself, but if you believe that I provide some sort of value to your endeavor  I will gladly lend my aid. One cannot live solely off of their family's name and I must seek out accomplishments of my own. This seems to be a perfect opportunity to do so. Should we require another meeting area in the future, I would gladly offer up my own home, though it is not as glamorous as this, or my box at the Lyceum theater, where we could enjoy a night of entertainment and discuss relevant matters."

Ilsa listened intently to what Blackblade had to say, as well as the enthusiastic response of the aristocrat Annalise. She pinched the bridge of her nose softly in contemplation.

Championing the cause of Order? Surely it could be considered a noble pursuit to beat back the demons pounding at the gate, but why her? Following the war she had used this "tour of Europe" as an excuse to coast along and push aside the troubles she had dealt with back home. Furthermore she couldn't understand why of all the powerful and and elite Europe had to offer, a lowly sergeant in the Swiss military was among this man's chosen. She wasn't even from a prominent family like the woman beside her.

Finally after a moment, she gave voice to her concern.

"Why me?"

With aught else to do besides go home with her tail between her legs, Blackblade's response would help her make up her mind. Besides, she was curious to know how he had gathered any information on her at all.

"Why not you?  A soldier's skills are always useful.  Things lurk in the darkness that are often best dealt with down the sight of a musket or at the end of a sword in my expierience."  Lord BLackblade took a sip of tea.  "However, as I said before my previous recruits have been lacking.  If you will not be able to uphold a standard of honor, dignity, and courage then it might be best if you leave for if you are uneasy now, then I doubt you could stand in the face of some of the challenges of the future.  I would rather you not be faced with the loss of an ally at a time of greatest desperation.  Surely you would understand, having walked the fields of war, that one needs to be able to rely on the man next to them not to panic at the first shots of battle."

Ilsa leaned back in her chair. He is straightforward, this is good at least. His response wasn't quite as revealing as she would have hoped for, but his direct nature had struck a chord with her own mentality.

"My apologies, Herr Blackblade if my caution appeared as cowardice. Please lay to rest your concerns about my integrity. It is my nature to try and look at a situation from as many ways as I can. If you require the fruit of my training, make use of it. I am sure that if I am called to serve my country, something can be arranged."

It was enough for her, whatever this man had planned she would at least see it through for the time being. As with everything, she would approach it with prudence.

"Excellent!  Now, we must get on with building a foundation for this organization.  I appreciate the offer of use of your theater box, we may very well need it in the future.  In a similar vein, I have been asked by a minor noble house for aid.  The Beenleigh family has apparently come into some kind of difficulty which they need discreet aid in solving.  While they are no major house, they are an old family with a good reputation and influence, a helpful family to have in our debt.  If you could go and speak with them and see how you can help, that would be a good start to rally some influence for our organization."  Lord Blackblade rose from his seat. "Unfortunately, I am unable to come with you.  I have some personal business to attend to.  Carlson can give you the address to the Beenleigh household.  You are free to stay and finish afternoon tea.  This may very well become a second home for us all."  He smiles warmly as he begins to make his way out of the hall.

"The Beenleigh family? I can't say I've heard of them but if a family is having a problem and we can assist it is probably worthwhile. I shall see Carlson after the tea is finished and look into this matter shortly. I'd appreciate your help, soldier. I don't believe I've caught your name."

"Ilsa Raisch, Dame Schwarz. I apologize for not introducing myself earlier, I did not want to interrupt Herr Blackblade." She gave as polite a smile that she could muster, in defiance of her normally slack expression.

"You mentioned you are from Potsdam, a lovely city. I enjoyed my stay there several months ago. The Brandenburg Gate is most impressive." she said, then after a beat: "What do you make of Herr Blackblade and his cause?"

Annalise had appeared very much on-board with Blackblade's proposal, but it wouldn't hurt to gain an opinion while he was out of the room.

Annalise nodded a brief approval before continuing her conversation.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Dame Raisch. Though if you would like to drop the formalities, you may call me Annalise. I do at times have yearning for my home, it is a beautiful city. However I do not experience such freedoms as I do here, away from my family.

I'm not sure what to think of Blackblade or this association, but I see it as an opportunity to better myself. He will likely have resources that I do not, as I have resources that he is likely lacking himself. It is a mutually beneficial agreement, and provides ample opportunity for me to do something as Annalise rather than as a Schwarz. Having someone who seems reliable like you at the table is also reassuring, so I figure I might as well experience what I can while I am here.
" After talking, Annalise continued to drink from her tea cup, curious as to what type it was. She would have to ask Carlson on her way out.

"Ah, please my standing is not so high as to be Dame but if you are inclined to continue on a first name basis that is more than alright with me, Annalise." It was rare to see a member of the upper crust eschew the use of formalities, but it suited Ilsa just fine.

She waited a moment, while her conversation partner took another sip from her tea.

"I am unsure where this venture will lead us, but I will see what I can do to make sure your faith in my reliability is not misplaced. Whenever you are prepared to pay the Beenleigh home a visit, I am ready."

Ilsa leaned back in her chair, wondering what the rest of the day may hold.

"Formalities are not well suited for a group such as what Blackblade has in mind, in my understanding. Thank you for working with me, Ilsa." Annalise next turned to Jonathan.

"Jonathan, could you arrange for a carriage? The address will be forthcoming."

She rose from her chair and walked across the grandiose, but empty hall back towards where she had entered. When she spotted Carlson, she greeted him warmly.

"Good evening, Carlson. The tea was quite tasty. May I ask what type it is, I am not familiar with it. Also, we would like the address of the Beenleigh estate, so that we may start on our task. Thank you in advance for your assistance."

Jonathan nods and makes his way out to the street ahead of you.  Carlson thanks you for you compliments and produces a card with the address of the Beeneigh residence along with Ilsa's rifle.  By the time you both arrive out on the street Jonathan has secured a passing coach which takes you away to the Beenleigh's home.  You arrive in a pleasent part of the city.  The homes are not particularly large but they all are freestanding and separated by greenery and tall wrought iron fences.  The lush gardens are somewhat marred by the slight haze of smog beginning to settle in as the sunlight begins to dim despite it still being mid-afternoon.  The fence's gate stands open and welcoming, the Beenliegh house awaits visitors.

Annalise thanked Carlson and accepted the card before stepping back out into the London streets. Seeing that Jonathan had already managed to get a coach, she gave the driver the address and climbed inside. On the ride over Annalise was quiet, contemplating what she had gotten herself in to and how to approach the Beenleigh family.

Upon arrival, seeing the gates open and receptive to visitors was pleasing. It seemed they were expected. She hopped down out of the coach and proceeded to the door.

Ilsa nodded politely after retrieving her affects, slung the rifle over her shoulder and followed Annalise to the street. She boarded the coach and sat down, setting her firearm upright between her legs holding it with a single hand on the wrapped fore-stock.

Annalise was quiet during the trip, which was fine as small-talk was not her strong suit. It would have been nice to smoke, but she was aware it was considered to be a foul habit by most people and it wouldn't do to be uncouth to a new acquaintance.

Once at their destination, she disembarked and stalked slowly after Annalise as they made their way through the gate unsure of what to expect.

[info]Since Ilsa is generally cautious she is going to make a perception check to keep on her toes if something happens. Let me know if you'd like me to be more specific. +2 since shes going to use her acute sense of hearing.

Ilsa
As you approach the front door you notice the two of you are being watched by a man from one of the third floor windows.  As you draw closer to the front door he withdraws from the window.  Nothing else seems out of place.

The knocks on the door are greeted by a servant who ushers you inside.  "Sir Beenleigh has been awaiting you.  Do come in."  He offers his hands to take anything you wish.  The man from the window can be seen from the front door descending the stairs.  He calls out to you.  "Are you Lord Blackblade's associates?  He said he would be sending someone along today."  Another person enters, a man, similar in appearance to the one who has come from down the stairs.  "Of course they are Lord Blackblade's associates Reginald, no one else is supposed to drop by today."  He bows to you.  "I am Robert Beenleigh and this is my brother and the head of our esteemed house: Reginald.  Might we ask for your introductions?"

Annalise gave a warm smile as the men greeted her, before replying herself when prompted. "My apologies, that was terribly rude of me. I am Annalise Schwarz and it is my pleasure to meet the both of you, Sir Robert Beenleigh and Sir Reginald Beenleigh. I am indeed one of the associates of Lord Blackblade, and he said that there is a problem that you are wanting to have solved. As a lady of some standing myself, I am aware of how delicate problems can be. If you would be willing to provide details on what is going on, I would be happy to help. She gave her introduction with a courtesy and continued to smile.

Ilsa reluctantly relinquished both her rifle and sword to the servant with a simple "Please look after them." before joining Annalise while she gave her introduction. She made sure to stand behind her and to the side, as she expected someone of her station should.

She gave a short bow following Annalise's introduction. "I am Sergeant Ilsa Raich, sirs. A companion of Dame Schwarz, also associated with Lord Blackblade. It is a pleasure." She attempted to put a pleasant look on her tired and scarred face.

Deciding it would be better to remain formal in the presence of members of high society, she resumed the use of honorifics with Annalise. Though she was accustomed to dealing with her "betters" she remained uncomfortable in their presence, as most aristocrats could be quite temperamental.

So unexpected from one of... his lordship's breeding."  "Robert!"  Reginald stammers, irritation on his face.  "Lord Blackblade is a perfectly respectable man.  I will not have you slandering his title in front of guests."  He is a little red in the face, an expression which seems to amuse his brother as a sly smile graces his face.  "I apoligize if I said anything rude my lovely lady."  Robert bows and once again kisses the back of Annalise's hand.  At this, even from across the hall, Reginald's eye roll can be seen and, to a small extent, heard.  "Yes well, if my younger brother would be so kind as to release our guests so that they can come up to my study and we may discuss more important matters?"  Robert winks at the two of you.  "I suppose that can be arranged.  I would like to finish introductions but I guess propriety is not in my brother's coffers at this moment."  He bows to Ilsa and waves the two of you along to follow Reginald up the stairs.
Reginald ascends the stairs up to the third floor where he leads you to his study overlooking the entrance to the house.  After your party of three and the Beeneigh brothers are in the study Reginald closes the door.  "Now, the problem which we have is that the contents of our safe has been pilfered."  At this his moves to the corner behind his desk to show a mid-sized safe, its door open and its contents missing.  "It was last night that all our family jewels were stolen from this safe.  Nothing was broken and none of the servants of family heard anything.  We need our valubles retrieved and with no clues as to how they were stolen we had to turn somewhere other than Scottland Yard for help."

Annalise took the greeting in stride, though she did not think too much of Robert, his obvious flirtations and disdain for non humans did not impress her. "Thank you for your kind greeting. However, we're here on business so perhaps this can wait until another time, Sir Robert Beenleigh." After Reginald managed to solve the situation and escort the group to the study, Annalise gave her full attention to the explanation and had a few questions of her own.

"Forgive me if this is too forward sir, but may I ask if you have any enemies? Another family that may wish to see you ruined for some reason. While they may not have taken action themselves, it may provide a valuable clue on where to start looking for the one that has caused such a disturbance. Regardless of how valuable the jewels are, I assume they are a family heirloom and having something like that stolen can feel like an even bigger loss than wealth. And if you don't mind, may I examine the safe to look for any potential clues that the thief may have left behind? Before an answer could be given, she turned to Ilsa. "Do you have anything you would like to add, Ilsa?"

Ilsa gave another wan smile to the uncomfortably forward gentleman, before following Reginald to the study.

After Annalise asked her if she had anything to add, she ran her thumb across her lower lip in contemplation before addressing Reginald. "If possible, could we have a list of the items missing from the safe as well as anything else you might believe the thief has absconded with, Sir."

[info]After waiting for a reply, regardless of it being positive or negative Ilsa is going to take a look around the room looking for signs of entry, impressions in the carpet from shoes (if there is a carpet), and anything else that might serve as potential evidence.

"Of course, feel free to examine anything you think might be related."  Reginald trys to stay out of your way as you examine the safe and room.  The safe seems to be emptied of quite a few valubles, several trays for gems and jewelry lie empty.  The only remaining contents of the safe are several deeds and titles.  As Annalise examines the safe Reginald answers Ilsa's question.  "The contents that appear to be stolen are several dozen unset jewels, a gold pendant with a sizeable emerald, a bracelet set with several diamonds, and two sets of silver and sapphire cufflinks.  They didn't take any of the deeds or titles to our property but... they did also take our family seal."  At mention of this Reginald looks pained.  "That is probably the most important thing they stole.  With it they could forge contracts and titles in our family name or otherwise masquerade around as myself with very potent evidence."  Robert interrupts "oh, yes, don't want anyone slandering the family name.  That is my realm of expertise."  As if to prove this point he interrupts Annalise's search with a quick grab of her buttocks, throwing off her attention.  Before she can react he raises his hand to chest and bows deeply.  "My apoligies, my hand must have slipped.  Perhaps as recompense I might let you know that I returned home last night from... nocturnal entertainment... and the only servant awake was Henry.  He might know something regarding what happened."

Annalise was disturbed by this man interrupting her investigation. At least he had provided some sort of information. "Right. Where may I find this Henry? I'd like to talk to him. As for what was stolen, you have my condolences. Losing something as precious as a family seal is surely cause for concern. I will do everything within my power, limited as it may be in this land, to see that your belongings are returned."

Robert opens his mouth to answer but his brother beats him to the punch.  "I believe that Henry is currently out procuring groceries.  You should be able to find him at the nearby markets.  His last stop is always at the local public house, the Ass' Yoke I believe it's called, to pick up beer for the servants so I would suggest you try waiting for him there.  Alternatively you can wait here for him to return."  Robert, managing to sidle his way past Jonathan who has been trying to keep him at bay, puts his hands on Annalise's shoulders.  "Oh do stay, the markets are no place for a pair of elegant ladies like yourselves and I would love to entertain the two of you."  His devilish grin never once breaks even when Reginald puts a firm hand on his shoulder and prys him away.  "Yes, I'm sure they would be fine with some tea dear Robert but first I believe the choice is theirs."

Annalise thought for a few moments. "I believe I shall head to the Ass' Yoke. While waiting for Henry to arrive, who knows what rumors could be overheard. Perhaps someone there may have an inkling of what has happened here, and if not I learn about the area and some other goings ons. There is a lot to be learned in a place such as that, even if others may see it as something below my station. Might you have the address to this establishment, Sir Reginald?" She readied herself to leave and called out to her companions. "Jonathan, Ilsa, would you like to accompany me to this fine establishment?"

"Of course m'lady, wherever you go I follow."  Jonathan says, sounding eager to remove the two of you from the presence of Robert.  The Beenleigh brothers give you the address and see you off as you leave their residence.  In the time you were in the Beenleigh home the smog has further descended to become the infamous pea souper of London.  It is difficult to see more than a few yards ahead through the thick smog and if it were not for the people going about their business in the streets you would have found yourselves completely lost.  However, you are able to make your way to the markets nonetheless.  The market still quite busy desite the press of the fog, commerces waits not for better atmosphere.  You find yourselves before the Ass' Yoke public house.  Street stalls line the road offering all kinds of foodstuffs and vendors bark out their wares.

There seemed to be a lot going on in front of the pub, but they were here for business and not for pleasure. "Shall we?" She proceeds into the Ass' Yoke.     "Oh no, I insists m'lady."  At that the barkeep begins to try and uncork the wine but seems to have trouble.  Despite his sturdy frame he struggles to remove the cork.  "Ah, eh, er, just need ter get this, hngh kerk, out therr, hurk, bottle!"  You notice a flagon on the shelf above him begin to make its way over the edge of the shelf, moved by unseen hands somewhat familiar to Annalise.  The flagon falls sqarely onto the barkeep, surprising him and causing him to flail his arms.  The wine bottle goes with his arm movements to break on the counter.  A spray of wine and glass shards spatters the three of you from the chest up.  Fortunately, none of you are wounded by the shards of glass.  The barkeep is made even more flustered by this.  "Oh no, 'ere let me 'elp ye."  He pulls out his rag and tries to wipe Annalise up with it but only suceeds in adding the moisture of (hopefully) stale beer to her garments before Jonathan, cursing under his breath at the state of his own dress, steps in with a hankerchief to try and at least dry the likely permanent stains.

Ilsa, had been somewhat disengaged from the conversation between her companion and the barkeep was eyeing the room. The sudden crash and spray of moisture snapped her attention back to the bar. She wiped a fleck of wine from her cheek and watched as the barkeep struggled to dab at the stains forming on Annalise's outfit before Jonathan interjected himself.

"Are you well, sir? You seem bothered." She said calmly and plainly to the barkeep while sliding bits of broken bottle into a little wet pile on the counter. She hoped she had come off as soothing.

Shortly after Henry dissapears around the corner of the house the front door opens and Robert emerges, dressed in evening finery of a deep blue color.  "Ah, you have returned!  Were you able to find Henry?  I would be greatly saddened if your lovely complextions were forced to endure the glum weather for no benefit."  He strolls out to meet you, smelling of a sweet cologne that manages to displace the reek of the smog as he draws near.  "I myself have an evening ahead of me so I will need to take my leave of you far too soon."  He bows deeply, swinging his top-hat out to the side in a sweeping gesture.  Rising he looks to Annalise.  "Perhaps you would like to come along?  I do not know what you experience has been in London so far but a lovely young lady such as yourself could have a wonderful time."

"Ah, yes, we did find Henry. He's a cheerful fellow, and was quite helpful. However, I still have business to attend to, and thus will decline your offer. When I get started on something, I prefer to be diligent and arrive at results quickly. I do hope that you have a pleasant evening none the less, Robert." With that, Annalise hoped that Robert would be on his way and leave herself and Ilsa to continue about their investigation.

Robert frowns and makes to swoon melodramatically, bringing his cuff to his forehead.  "Ah, I am aghast to hear that such a lovely lady would rather conduct such a rough business than partake of my company but I guess I will somehow manage."  Dropping the pose, he returns his top hat to his head.  "Well then I shall let you go about your business.  Good evening."  He flashes a smile to you all and makes his way out the gate and into the smog, whistling a tune as he goes.
Just after Robert makes his way off the property Reginald, walking through the entryway towards the stairs, spots you at the door.  He quickely comes over.  "Ah, you're back.  Tell me, what progress have you made on the case?"  Then, giving an expression of surprising himself, adds.  "Oh, my manners.  I'm sorry, do come inside to the parlor."  He beckons you in.  "I hope you can forgive me, I am just quite anxious to see the case solved."

Annalise gave Reginald a warm smile. "Worry not, I understand your anticipation."

Following his offer, Annalise stepped into the parlor. "Forgive me if this is out of place, Reginald, but is it possible that Robert's... habits have landed the family into a bit of a hard spot on the finances? The conversation that we had with Henry didn't uncover too much information and it seems as if your family is well liked so you wouldn't be targeted out of spite. I do not wish to point the blame at your own brother, but I feel that I must explore every possible angle of this case. I hope you understand. She gave a nervous smile as she brought up her suspicions.

[info] Charm to see if Reginald will reveal any additional info.

Ilsa stalked along quietly into the parlor behind Annalise. She chose let her companion carry the conversation, but would keep an eye on the way Reginald responded. Perhaps even now he might be hiding something, and the smallest tell could give them a little break in the investigation.

[info]Perception to pay close attention while Reginald speaks, looking for signs of discomfort or if he is concealing anything.

Reginald let out an exasperated sigh.  "I honestly don't know what Robert could have done that he hasn't already."  Reginald walks over to a small table and picks up one of the decanters arranged with glasses and pours himself a drink.  Taking the drink he sinks into one of the chairs and sips at the liquor with a pondering look on his face.  "Robert has always been a bit of a rogue.  He never became the gentleman he should have, always fighting father up to the day he died.  Not even the army was able to instill discipline in him.  If anything, it only gave him a taste for that dreadful opium.  When he goes on a spree of the stuff anything becomes possible.  He has even brought a pair of... ladies of the night... to the Lanternlight club on one such binge."  He paused to take another sip of liquor, his eyes lingering on the crystal glass.  "Financially?  I don't think that Robert could manage to smoke his way though the family's assets.  He doesn't have a mind for finances so I have been able to make it difficult enough that he would need to actually work to get more than the respectable allowance I provide him.  Who knows what kind of trouble he could have got himself into though...  I hate to think my own brother a thief but the theft of the jewels could be the act of desperation I didn't want to think possible."
Reginald finishes his drink with another sip and sets the glass down on the table next to his chair.  "If Robert is involved in something then I think that his preferred opium den would be the place to start.  It's a place called the Den of the White Tiger, as far as opium dens go I believe it to be a decent establishment.  It caters to the higher classes but at the same time is run by orientals and one can never be sure what they might be up to."

[info]Reginald's voice seems to hold the tired tone of a weary but truthful statement, you get the sense of a cathartic release in what he says.[/info]

"In a worst case scenario it could be your brother behind all of this, but it could also be someone that he has angered in some fashion. Do you happen to know if The Den of the White Tiger is the place that he was going tonight? It would be quite difficult to ask around about him if he is present." Annalise let out a sigh and continued to talk. "I do hope that this place leads to some clues. I'd like to solve this matter with haste, as I am sure you would as well. Robert is certainly a... unique fellow, but I don't want to believe that he is the type that could cause such harm to his family."

Reginald takes a moment to think.  "I don't know of Robert's plans for the evening.  He tries to keep me guessing with his nightly antics.  I don't know why he continues to try me like this.  I usually only ever find out where he has been after the fact.  I do however think he went to the den last night and he tends to try and avoid doing the same thing two nights in a row so I don't think he would be there."  Reginald stands before speaking again, carrying his glass back to its table.  "I wish you the best of luck, even if it is my brother that has caused all of this I would rather know the truth of this matter.  If there is anything you can think of that you might need from me, please do no hesitate to ask."

Annalise let out a gentle smile. "I appreciate your cooperation, Reginald. I will be sure to inform you of my findings, though I hope that Robert is innocent. I've no further questions at this time, and if Ilsa does not, I believe we should head to the Den of the White Tiger shortly. I would like to return your peace of mind in this stressful time." Annalise motioned to Ilsa, before turning to Jonathan. "I hope I can count on you again tonight, Jonathan."

Ilsa nodded in agreement, hopefully the Den would provide some clue to get a little traction on the case.

[info]Ilsa will reacquire her personal effects from whichever valet she left them with when the group leaves.[/info]

On the way out of the mansion she turned to her fairer companion.

Though the clientele of the White Tiger is genteel I suggest you steel yourself for the possibility of violence. It is a bed of... base desire after all. If events turn sour it would bring me peace of mind if you should stay near me, but I hope it should not come to that."

"Thank you, I shall keep that in mind in the event that it comes to blows. I have a small degree of confidence in my  ability to defend myself, but nothing beats a trained professional." As it seemed that the conversation was winding down, Annalise made preparations to leave. She would like to see the case solved as soon as possible.

[info]if scene is over, Annalise will travel to the opium den.[/info]

Reginald sees you off with directions to the opium den.  The walk through the dark smog goes without incident, perhaps due to its concealing nature preventing any travelers of the dark streets from seeing one another.  You eventually find your way to the red light district where the Den of the White Tiger was to be found.  A bawdy place of brothels and other vices, a cheeful atmosphere seems to permeate the night as revelers go about.  The streets are crowded with men and their escorts.  Annalise's garb draws many an eye causing Jonathan to halt the party's advance.  "I'm sorry m'lady but are you sure you want to go on?  This hardly seems the place for someone of your birth.  While I do not doubt our new friend's skill against anyone that might wish to do you physical harm, there is no telling what might happen.  This chaotic place could hold something far too dangerous for even our soldier friend here to handle."

"I appreciate your concern Jonathan, but I feel obligated to solve this case and with the two of you here, I feel that it will be alright. If gentleman such as  Robert manages to make it home safe nightly, I have faith that we shall be fine as well."

"Very well then."  Jonathan removes a pistol from his breast pocket and cocks the hammer.  "I do hope this doesn't become necessary."  He replaces the pistol and straightenes his coat before taking up his position just behind Annalise.  It is only a few more blocks before you arrive at The Den of the White Tiger.  A sign bearing the name of the establisment hangs from above the entrance.  Carved into the door are two tigers reared to face eachother, above them are carved clawed serpents of some kind.  The faint smell of incense floats through the stagnant smog.  The windows on the front of the front of the building reveal only bright red curtains illuminated from within obscuring any activity on the other side.  The plucking sound of some instrument can be heard from where you stand outside just audible under the din of the rest of the street's business.

"I hope so as well." Annalise had a terse reply, she was focused on reaching the bottom of this case. She reached for the door, her hands trembling. Never had she thought that she would end up in a place like this. Even if it was for a good cause. Annalise did her best to hide her fear as she pushed open the door and took in the sights of The Den of the White Tiger.

The smell of smouldering incense and opium flows out from the doorway as you open the door.  Within, candles burn in red paper lanterns to cast a crimson light on the interior.  Before you an oak desk sits with a foreign man standing behind it dressed in a simple blue silk shirt which seems to hang down below his waist to his knees, cloth buttons fastened all the way up to the small erect collar.  Behind him sits a cabinet  enshrined in which is some archon-like figure weilding a halberd flanked by piles of incense. the entry room is otherwise rather sparsly furnished with a single bench and a pot of bamboo.  Red curtains obscure what lies beyond the two doorways on either side of the desk.  The foreign man perks up from a ledger to pick up a slip of paper which he places on the desk before himself.  "How many?"  He asks in a heavily accented voice.
