Background

Noelle was born in the US, to a somewhat poor family. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father was somewhat of a gruff, impatient man, not well-suited for child rearing. He worked as a police officer, with very late hours, usually not coming home until after midnight. As a result, Noelle learned to fend for herself from an early age. Her father would leave her the money she needed, and even at 10 or 12 years old, she would buy her own groceries and cook dinner on her own. She didn't blame her father for the state of her childhood; in fact, she looked up to him for his work in the police force. It was that admiration that later guided her towards joining the military.

After finishing High School, she wanted to go to College and study Engineering, but being in a single-parent family, it would have been hard on her father, financially. She wanted to continue to support herself, as she had as a child, instead of burden her father with her troubles. She joined the military partly because she aspired to be a protector, like her father was, and partly because it would pay for college after she was discharged.

That was in 1971, when she was 18 years old. It was near the tail end of the Vietnam War, where she was deployed to fight. It was a harder life than she expected it to be, but she didn't give up. This was something she had chosen for herself. She fought as a soldier for four years, until one night in 1975, where she saw something that changed her forever.

It was just after a napalm strike on a village that had been harboring insurgents. She was part of the unit sent to clean up the surrounding area. It was her and three others, cutting their way through the jungle, when one of them disappeared. None of them had even noticed until it was too late. There had been no sound of gunfire, so it hadn't been the Vietnamese. They presumed that he had merely gotten lost, but they didn't have much time to look for him. So they decided to split up and do a quick search, agreeing to rendezvous at where they were five minutes later.

After five minutes of fruitless searching, she returned to the clearing in the jungle expecting to find her fellow soldiers, hopefully alive and well.

They were dead. But even so, they were walking - shambling slowly towards her, staring at her with glowing red eyes. Not only the one that had disappeared first, but the others who had gone to look for him, who had suffered the same fate.

She turned and ran, scared out of her mind. But there were more of them - villagers from the village that had just been bombed, the light burn marks on their body confirming that they had once been survivors. She didn't know what monster had found them and turned them into what they were, nor was she in any state of mind to make guesses. She shot wildly, taking down as many as she had to in order to break through. One that she thought had been dead for good had suddenly grabbed hold of her foot. She yanked it so hard that the dead man's arm came clean off, the detached limb still gripping her shoe. She ran for miles with the constant feeling of a man's hand grabbing at her ankles, until she couldn't run anymore.

She was taken out of the country on a helicopter a few days later. She didn't tell anyone about what she had saw. They would have thought she was crazy, after all. Even she thought she was crazy. She told herself that it had just been a hallucination. Their glowing red eyes may have just been a trick of the light, brought on by the fire. But even telling herself that would mean that she had gunned down innocent villagers, and her former squad mates.

When the army did an official investigation, the corpses were never found - even the ones she had sure had been left in exactly that place. Almost as though they had gotten up and walked away. Whatever had happened in that jungle, she ended up not being convicted, or even suspected, of anything, which in a way made it even worse for her. She couldn't stand going about life normally, knowing what had happened. Being put in jail would at least offer some kind of validation that what she had seen hadn't been a dream.

She could only continue to function by pushing it to the back of her mind, burying it beneath anything she could. The military would have paid for her to go to college, but she had lost any drive to further her schooling. The huge anti-war movement at the time had taken to the streets, denouncing her and other veterans as murderers, which only served to further her downward spiral into depression. She still didn't know for sure if what she had seen was real, or whether she had merely killed innocent people.

The only way she could see to break away from it all was to leave the country. She moved to Britain hoping that she could put the past behind her. Because of her military experience, she was hired by the Jamesons as a bodyguard for Diana and Desmond Jameson, twins and heirs to the estate. Given that her own childhood had involved very little interaction with her parents, she didn't know a lot about dealing with kids. She took on a bit of a standoffish personality, letting them fend for themselves most of the time, and only stepping in if they really needed help. She honestly doesn't know what they think of her, if anything, but as long as her duty is to protect them, she intends to continue doing so.

It had been five years since that horrible night, and she was almost starting to recover. She had started smoking a little less, and sleeping easier. As long as she didn't think about it too much, she figured she would be fine. At least, as long as nothing happened that reminded her too strongly of it.
