《Chapter 1: 18th Birthday》
Location: New World - Isikawa Sovereignty - Tamajima Village
Date: Day 1 - Evening

You had just had your 18th birthday celebration and your neighbors had come to visit for it. Already, they were headed out the door as your parents began putting away the dishes. Your childhood friend and neighbor, Tamiko Shimizu, was the last one out the door, her parents leaving just a few moments ago.

"See you at practice tomorrow, Mako!"

She said grinning. "Happy birthday too once again... And about your gift? I'll get it to you for tomorrow..." She puffed her cheek and seemed to blush slightly, but calmed down soon enough. With that she left.

Once she was gone, it was your mother who broke the silence.

"Tami-chan is such a nice girl, Mako." Your mother said as she washed the pans. Your father, who had waved the Shimizu clan goodbye, came back into the door.

"You're 18 now son! It's time to be looking for someone to settle down with, don't you think?" He grinned at you. "Make a family, give us some grandkids. Anyways, I wanted to get you this after they left. Didn't want Tami-chan to get jealous."

He revealed forth what looked to be a sword. It was of the same make that the people of your country used. A katana. He placed it on the table for you.

"Plus... it's just about this time when your mom gave birth to you... I think it's fitting we get you your coming of age gift then."

"18 years exactly... Time really does fly."

It was at that moment that memories flooded in your mind. Towering buildings. Roads of which you haven't seen before. People you've never seen. A life that wasn't quite yours, but was at the same time.

3. People in Isikawa are always dark/black haired and look Japanese

6. About 20 years ago most of your country vanished. Your country found itself in the New World. Missing more than half it's infrastructure and armies. And the people of the world had been fighting demons for over 80 years prior.
7. You grew up with war. Luckily your village is far from the front. Though in the last 20 years Isikawa has shrunk more. The borders are getting a bit close..
8. I'll give you a map later today.
9. In the last 20 years only a few other heroes had been summoned that you are aware of. Your Isikawa one, and two foreigners from other countries.

The day had started like any other. Mako woke up early before sun rise, went outside and exercised practicing his katas with his bare hands and with a wood stick he had fashioned into a katana-like sword. This habit had been an early practice for Mako and many in the village thought it was a strange practice. But it brought clarity to the day and someone stilled an urge inside to better understand the world and his place in it.

His next part of the morning included chores around the farm to include tending the crops and rotating the live stock to new pastures as needed. He had a knack for this that was borderline intuitive and often his father would say he was born to be a farmer. Those words sounded great but someone they always rang with accuracy but also with a pang of sadness. By the time he had become a young teen, Mako had revised how the Ikeda clan maintained the lands for generations before. Now their crops were more fertile and produced better than that had in years. It was a pulse of the earth to Mako, how the systems were connected and depended upon one another. Occasionally he would see things like schematics of the land before him and be able to connect the dots. What was a schematic?

Oh right today is my birthday, today I would turn 18! This seemed to be important and felt like it had happened before. There was a sense of remorse that came and went.

Tamiko was quite cute and reminded him of Princess Sakura from that one manga. Wait what is a manga? His timing was slow but finally Mako spoke with a bit of hesitation, "Thank you...Tamiko, you didn't have to do that."

Mako made his way back to the table to sit with his parents.

"Tami-chan is such a nice girl, Mako." His mother said in her motherly way.

He shifted slightly, "Yes mother, I know she is...she's a good friend." His eyes cut away immediately his cheeks flush with embarrassment.

As Mako took a sip of fresh goats milk his father uttered those insane words about a family and settling down, he quickly slammed the glass down, spraying milk out from his absolute shock of dads words. "FATHER! What are you saying...I umm...I need to....umm...clean up this mess!!" He quickly cleaned up the milk splatter and lowered his eyes in both shame and embarrassment. This all felt so familiar.

His mother and father continued to speak but the katana that was placed in front of him became the sole focus of his gaze. His vision blurred and images began to pour into his mind. At first his mind was blank like a computer screen with errors. Wait what is a computer screen? Blizzard I loved that place, cherry blossoms in the LA park, kendo tournaments...images swirled and flashed all around him and for a brief moment Mako stood before Keisagi Subachi each acknowledging the other.

Keisagi said, "This is your chance Mako, do it differently, see the world, embrace your freedom!" What did it all mean? As quickly as it came it receded like a wave.

Mako was breathing heavily, looking to his mother and father trying to understand what it all meant. At last not knowing what else to say or he sucked in a deep breath of air, pushing down all of his emotions as he had been trained to do, "Mother, Father, thank you for such a beautiful gift. This is beyond words; I am truly honored to have you as my parents. May I be excused from the table and possibly take the day off? It is my birthday after all." He put on his best grin that he could muster.

"That's alright son." Your dad said. "Take the sword with you though." He said gently.

For your family, working on a farm, coupled with the war that had been going on, meant that living conditions were poorer, though, compared to the cities themselves, life out in the country didn't need a lot of money. True, you did increase the yield and production of your farm, and it was due to this that compared to many others in the surrounding villages, you and your family were better off. However, buying a katana, was something a bit on the more extravagant side. It was at least fifty gold pieces.

Heading to your room, it was in the traditional Isikawa style, with a tatami mat that made up the floor.

The memories were fresh in your mind. You've always had a knack for easily remembering things that you've seen. Even now, you can see the words that flashed in that green translucent window in your mind's eye.

At last he was alone and allowed to sift through the chaos that was roiling within Mako's mind. He was practical after all and deduced that he died in prior life and was reborn. This was not too far fetched coming from a culture that embraced reincarnation. The one part that was left out in those teachings was the existence of other worlds.

Mako settled into a steady zazen stance allowing his mind to open up and let the memories flow within his third eye. There was no escaping that this was real, but what did it mean?

Breathing deeply, Mako relaxed his thoughts allowing them to flow into the flame and burn away. Eventually nothing was left but the flame which waived away and he was left with darkness. Slowly two worlds crept into his mind each bring with them a lifetime of experiences and understanding. Some parts of his life ran in perfect parallel while others were grossly different.

He allowed it to pass through his mind and become a part of his whole self.

Anyone who watched Mako saw that he had taken hold of the katana and climbed into a perfect kendo stance and slowly began to trace fluid motions. His body seemed to be resonating to the perspective of two styles, relearning muscles long forgotten by atrophy.

A tear escaped his eye just for a moment, embracing the death of his former self.

The screen that passed before his eyes seemed foreign at first, but to Keisagi the words were familiar. He felt like a video game character that had crossed over into a fantasy universe. The excitement boiled to the surface for a moment, but was quickly washed away by the moment.

He was special, he was meant to be a hero, and perhaps his destiny was beyond the farm. Each list item passed through his lips for a moment. Mako accepted it all, allowed these two lives to blend and twist into 1 perfect form. There was no need to live as two as he had always been one, just himself.

How did those in this world explain magic? The concept seemed foreign to him as if he were denied a birthright. Mako allowed his mind to drift beyond his form. At first viewing a young man performing kendo forms that seemed foreign. His mind continued to drift in search of the circuitry of the world what connected the world what source drove its powers. Could he touch it, was it his to control, or was he simply a farmer. He refused that notion and pressed deeper...

When you began looking internally and deep within yourself, trying to focus on the idea of magic and how it works. You felt like you could make out something. It was strange, as your parents had you tested for magical ability much earlier in life, but like them, it was determined that you had no compatibility with any of the 6 elements.

But when you peered inside you could sense the magic within you. Was this what they called mana? It was like a large lake, and if you needed to, you could almost imagine yourself pulling from that lake. From that reservoir that made up your magic.[/info]

Mako was surprised at first that his suspicion was correct that he did indeed posses magical talent. The magic appeared to be within and not at first glance ambient in the environment. Perhaps he was simply looking at it the wrong way. Perhaps he needed magic to be able perceive it.

His body finally settled back into a sturdy zazen pose laying the katana across his lap. Mako concentrated on the lake coaxing it to the surface imagining it flowing up through his veins filling his chakras with power.

His breathing was even as he measured each action attempting to raise the power to the surface. He allowed the energy to continue to flow upward toward his third eye. Once he felt that the he had all of the pathways opened, Mako attempted to open his third eye, to see the world through a new set of eyes. Perhaps even feeling the ambient energy flow through his body.

Of course this could all be for nothing but it felt like he was taking steps toward something.

Focusing outwards, you seemed to get a sense of something. Like a presence of two others. It took you a moment to realize that it was your parents. You had your eyes closed, yet you could get a feel of around where your parents were exactly. It felt akin to the lake of mana that you felt within yourself, though, theirs felt more distant.

There were no other sources of mana that you were able to sense nearby.[/info]

Mako's mind relaxed allowing his senses to return to back and focus inward. His first theory of this fantasy world being a product of ambient mana is either incorrect or will need more data to further my hypothesis.

He needed to confirm one more thing before speaking with his parents about some of this. Parts must be left out to avoid concerns of his mental stability. It would be of great benefit to be able to not only be able to explain but also be able to show that he possessed the gift.
Mako utilized the same method that he had for sensing his parents and allowed the mana to flow outward into his hands. He had no way of knowing if he had elemental talent so he simply allowed the mana to flow. Perhaps it would take for or shape based on his will.

He envisioned the mana flowing through his meridian system from the pool within through his arm and outward towards his palms.

Slowly he opened his eyes to see if anything had happened.

Once you focused on envisioning your mana flow towards your palm, you felt the sensation keenly of that movement. You noted that you felt just slightly more tired from the event, and the moment you opened your eyes, you saw palms and hands completely a-glow. Though, it didn't seem to be a glow that gave off light in the physical world. No, it was more like something else, as if you were seeing the flow of mana in the physical world, which represented itself as a glow.[/info]

Mako was shocked that it had worked. He was startled and without any thought leap up from the seated position, katana rattling away. "I AM A FREAKING FANTASY WIZARD or Chi master who cares, this is awesome!", he thought to himself!!! Embarrassed, he quickly gathered up the katana and placed it back into its sheath.

This opened up so many possibilities and also left him wondering about so many other potential outcomes. Did he not have a physical manifestation because he and his parents shared some sort of invisible power much like Ki. This would explain a couple of things for sure.

That brought other items into question as he muttered to himself, "what in the world is Translate All, Personal Status, Consumer, Experience Eater, Unlimited Internet (that would begged more questions) and web surfer."

For now he was stoked to know that he was indeed different and he could change his stars. Perhaps Mako was destined for more and this was his second chance.

QuoteI am composing myself, dressing in attire fitting exercise and looking for a way to wear the katana with what I have available. Then once he is dressed, Mako goes to look for his father.

Mako was shocked to see that he had screens to interact with! This was just like a Fantasy RPG. This is insane!!! I was given a second chance to do what I love!!!! Thank you whoever did this wonderful thing.

He pauses for a moment and gives a silent prayer of thanks.

Well depending on how this world works I appear to be a pretty decent character. Seems like a good time to take a few of these things for a test drive before venturing off to talk with dad.

The focus on ability seems like a type of item identification. So perhaps I should start there.

Mako held out the katana his father had purchased for him. He thought to himself Focus on Katana and waited to see what happens.

The notion that he had an internet browser at his disposal in a world without internet seemed both interesting and potentially game changing.

Mako focused on calling up the internet browser and attempted to type / search for "How to effectively cast/channel mana."

I need to see if this knowledge center is based around my personal knowledge and to what places does it connect, what server could this all relate to. Is the simply a way to revisit items from the past or is this actually some sort of great scry based window of information.

If that should fail, Mako will attempt to focus on calling up the internet browser again and attempted to type / search for "Current events in Los Angeles."

When you attempted to focus on the katana however, nothing seemed to happen.

When you entered the search query in, you got what you would have expected as results from the internet.

Quotehttps://www.google.com/search?safe=active&source=hp&ei=vhw1XNSFCYH_0wLn2ZHADQ&q=How+to+effectively+cast%2Fchannel+mana.&btnK=Google+Search&oq=How+to+effectively+cast%2Fchannel+mana.&gs_l=psy-ab.3...0.0..20...0.0..0.0.0.......0....2..gws-wiz.

Changing gears and entering the search query for 'Current events in Los Angeles.', you managed to get a list of events as well. You remembered when you died, and judging from the most recent events, it looks like these were captured on the date of your death in that other life, in that other world.

What happened next was both a bit shocking and slightly underwhelming.

For now it appears that my connection to the Internet in some way revolves around my time of existence on the Old World. At least when it comes to events / understanding of time. A good note for later.

Perhaps he was a newbie and this was his first day playing this RPG. This means I will need QUESTS and EXPERIENCE! Oh boy time to find a way to get off this farm!

Last thoughts before departing his room, Mako had a hunch but needed to be sure he was right.

He closed his eyes one last time:

Focus On: Consumer, please provide details.

Then after a moment had passed.

Focus on: Unlimited Internet, please provide details.

Mako was satisfied with the results for the day. This was enough information to help him in working up a solution or at least a base line for a course of action. It would take time to cultivate these new found gifts and likely lots of possible outcomes. A good montage will certainly help with this but for now he needed to work with his parents and figure out why they were excluded from being selected for abilities.
The chess board began to spin in his head from the old life. Patterns began to emerge and he could see the potential tactical outcomes. His previous life was an amazing landscape of probability prediction and pattern recognition. He was born to be a strategist this was something he would need to polish based in this new world.

The most likely reason was on purpose. His parents wanted them to be secluded to live peaceful lives. He knew very little about their lives before he was born. Perhaps a mystery was there as well.

There discussion was of no surprise to Mako as he walked back in. He blushed a bit at the mention of courtship and the possibility of a wife.

Uhmm...he cleared his throat to announce his presence, "I would like to talk with you two about why we have been passed over on our "abilities." I know that we as a family me included possess a great deal of mana."

He looks to each of them awaiting an answer.

It was strange, as you had memories of both this father, and the father you had in the other world. At your statement, your parents looked at each other, than your father sighed.

"Mako..." Your father began. "How... do you know this?" When your father began to speak, your mother moved over to him as well and sat down next to him.

"We used to be soldiers of the imperial army. Your father was a swordsman, and I was a mage. Your father and I barely survived back then... Our company was mistaken for dead... But instead of coming back to report. We decided to try to live peacefully... here. We changed our names, and had been living here since."

"When we first had you tested for magic when you were young, it was determined that you weren't compatible with any of the elements. And as a father, I was glad. You see... If you were compatible with any of them, they would have taken you away to train you to become a soldier."
Title: Re: [Mako] Chapter 1: 18th Birthday

At first a wave of betrayal washed over him but it quickly passed. A young man growing up would typically not have a lot of questions of the past. After all it is human nature to accept things as they were. He was nodding to himself sagely...WAKE UP YOU IDOIT this is YOUR BACKSTORY!!! A child of Soldiers sent escaped a life of war to become farmers. This was the perfect setup to any video game.
His parents likely observed a swirling mix of emotions pass over his face and his eyes betray him with excitement for a few moments, before regaining his composure. "I have so many questions." He trailed off with that brief statement.

After he was finally able to gather his composure, his demeanor seemed to shift to a more analytical scientific appearance, "It's hard to explain, but not long after I went to my room, I took some time to mediate on the day. While in meditation, I sensed a well of power lying within me. I am not certain why I do not have an element but I do know that I posses a great deal of raw power, similar in scope to each of yours. "

It was worth testing to see if they could see it to.

He stretched out his hand and focused on manifesting the energy once more enshrouding his hand. "So far when I draw this power out, it does not appear to take on a visible form or shape. Perhaps you two can help me in understanding what this is."

In your hands again, you willed it to glow with the power of mana. The father scrunched up his eyebrows, he looked at your hands, but he couldn't see what you saw. Your mother looked as well, but she was at first, just like her father, but then something dawned on her.

"Mako... What you're describing is mana. It's not something people can see, but, it's something the caster can feel. Are you...?" Your mother stood up, heading towards you. Once she was close enough, she spread her hands in front of her as well.

"When new mages are taught... They are first taught to sense the mana, then to pull it out of them. In much the same way you are doing now. Imagining pulling it out with your very hands is the easiest way to learn. This... Usually takes a learning mage months or even years to accomplish... Where did you learn this?" Your mother looked at curiously, with a hint of amazement in her eyes.

"There is mana in almost everything, though, there are more of it in humans. A stronger human would have more of it than a child, too, for example. It's been many years since..." Your mother closed her eyes then, and with her hands still open-palmed, you saw a similar glow appear in her hands.

"Mana is invisible... But you feel it. It's something tangible when it comes to using magic. I can't believe you have the talent for-"

Before you mother could finish you father spoke.

"No. Absolutely not. You start learning magic, before you know it, you'll be fighting in that war too."

At last things began to make sense. As his parents started to peel back layers of the onion the mystery started to take shape.

He turned to his mom beaming with a smile, "While I meditated the notion of drawing this power out came to me. I could sense it was there in my body, and I desperately wanted to see what it was. So I relaxed my body and allowed it to flow through me. At first it flowed to my third eye and that allowed me to sense that you both had mana. I then was able to collate it into my hands."

Mako was proud of himself and apparently he was indeed a Wizard!!! I must quickly learn from the mistakes of Gandalf and Harry Potter. Wait those are terrible measuring sticks. Maybe mother is likely the better person to look towards. His mind was still a bit chaotic with topics racing in and out of his mind.

He looked to his mother again pleading in his eyes to understand. He knew his father would not approve that was stereotypical after all. This was the time to take responsibility to show that I understood the consequences.

Mako looked to his father and mother, "I know that you two left the war and chose this life of peace. This life has allowed me to both grow and learn why it is important to protect the things that I love. You two mean the world to me but I know that I am destined for great things. I feel it would be better if you two would teach me rather than let me go at this alone."

What should I tell them how much should they know. Too much would make him sound like a crazy person and he might well get locked up. He could possibly spin a story of hero's birth but that to could end badly. So the truth or well a version of it should suffice.

His thoughts flowed naturally as he attempted to explain, "Father, this sword as I wield it my body possess memory of it. I have proficiency and understanding of how to use this weapon that I should not possess. I am a natural and perhaps a naturally talented mage as well. I must understand what that means. Would you deny me my destiny?"

His eyes and expressions carried with them sorrow as he poured out his hearts ambition. This was a request that knew would bring pain but it was one that Mako was certain was necessary in order to sway his father.

Your father sighed.

"I don't understand what you mean by already having memory of the sword. But I thought like you once, long ago. I was a step above the other soldiers with my swordsmanship. Before that I had been training under a master as well. I thought it was my destiny too, to help fight. But once you start... It's hard to get back to a normal life. If I didn't meet your mother, I'd probably be dead by now. Our home might not be much... But we built this for you, son. Even if we have to sell most of the things we grow for cheap to the imperial city, we have our own place here, safe from the war."

Mako looked to his father the confusion obviously in his eyes, but that was the bait after all. He had to prove that he was capable beyond normal the average citizen. He had to show that he was indeed chosen and born for this duty.

It was standard to become proficient before departing on your first quest. He needed a class after all. "Father and mother I will hopefully prove today that I am capable of the duty that I was born for. Once you do agree to my training I will not leave here until I am ready, that is promise."

Closing his eyes Mako again allowed the past memories to flow into his mind, picking apart the similarities and focusing specifically on kendo and all of its art forms. He specifically sought out maneuvers that were obviously advanced and not something he would have ever learned on the farm.

He then stepped into those forms allowing the katana to dance around him moving in a form that was certainly complex and well beyond anything he should know or have been taught.

The last piece would be more difficult but it was worth a try. He needed to impress them to know that he was capable.

As he finished the last form, he allowed the blade to settle into a prepared stance, displaying the intent to engage your opponent.

He reached down into his power drawing it back up through his body and extending it to wrap around the blade. He envisioned the air molecules that surrounded the blade, condensing down tightly around the blade. The idea was to tighten the air and then force it to vibrate. The friction of the air along with the tight space should produce fire, he hope, if not it was worth a try.

You father frowned.[/info]

"The movements of a kata. I don't know where you learned this son... But your movements are pretty sharp. I'll give you that. However, you are not to learn any of this nonsense and get yourself killed."

"Daiji..." Your mom pleaded along with you. "Trust me that its rare to see a talent like our son's... We should be encouraging."

Your father held up a hand. Then he learned sternly at you, and then towards your mother. He sighed.

"Fine... But only after you prove yourself Mako. I'll give you a week, on the 7th day we are to duel. The first one to strike and land a solid hit would be declared the winner. If you can't best me, then you have no chance out in the real world."

When you attempted to gather and shape the mana around the sword, it was a difficult task, and eventually the mana dispersed.

Mako felt his father's eye studying his movements as he drifted through the various stances and maneuvers. Once it was all said and done he was not surprised by his father's statements. He had hoped for a diplomatic solution but when it came to strong willed parents the most likely course inevitably would be head on.

The power did not shape the way he had intended but for now he at least had a concept to work towards. Perhaps a Sword Mage of sorts. Perhaps that would be the best way to blend his talents.

He turned to his father, sheathing the katana and taking a more relaxed stance, "Otou-san, I accept your terns. I would like to ask to be excused from my chores for the next several days to allow me to time to prepare."

He then turned to his mother, "Okaa-san, would you please assist me in the basics of harnessing mana and shaping its flow. I would prefer to not hurt myself while I attempt to train and strengthen my abilities in preparation for this duel."

"Of course Mako..." Your mom looked over to your dad for approval. Your dad simply nodded.

"Very well... Focus on your training, either with your mom, or hone your skills with the blade." He said simply. Your mother, on the other hand, looked absolutely excited.

"Make, be proud that you're a natural. To be able to sense mana on your own without any instruction is a rare feat. We could... start your first lessons tonight? Or... actually... How about tomorrow? It's... Been years since I last cast anything, or manipulated mana."

QuoteYou'll be the first going into the Mana Manipulation techniques, I have some that I brainstormed on the doc, but feel free to have suggestions as well and help me build the system. Keep in mind I separate Mana to Ki, so even if they can be used interchangeably and potentially stack, there are some differences too, so I'll have final say whether or not something belongs under Mana Manipulation or a Ki Manipulation. An easy way to think about it, is that Ki cannot usually be 'shared' and is more attuned to the living being, while Mana can inhabit weapons or other inanimate objects as long as that particular container can hold it. Generally casters use Mana, but there are ways a swordsman can make use of it, one such is the Sharpened Blade technique.

Well everything was certainly going to plan. Piss off pops check, make mom happy check, and last of all go on an adventure (pending resolution). Things were shaping up for Mako to either become a powerful adventure or a very smart farmer. All fun aside though...

Mako looked to his father, bowed deeply, "Thank you for the opportunity to test my prowess, Otou-san, I will make you proud."

His father would return the bow and then likely left the room obviously displeased with the entire affair.

"Okaa-san, I cannot thank you enough for the chance to learn from you. I would like time in the late evenings to meditate and will plan to train with the blade at first light. Perhaps after lunch, we can focus on my knowledge of the magical arts?"

"Then rest well, Mako, tomorrow, we'll begin you're training in magic."

Location: New World - Isikawa Sovereignty - Tamajima Village
Date: Day 2 - Throughout the day

You begin your training, after getting a full night's rest, you end up spending a full 16 hours on training. Equally spaced out between martial training and magic training.

Your mother soon found out that you were most interested in enchantment, and she had begun teaching you how it works. From that, you found out that casting a spell, at east the way your mother was trained, started with gathering mana to your hands, and then imagining a spell to be cast with that mana. If it worked, an incantation will form in your mind. Speaking those words outloud and willing the mana to form a spell, it will become the spell that you picture. Casting a spell was made out of multiple components.

First, an idea of the spell you want to cast, and the prerequisite mana.

Secondly, reciting the incantation that comes to mind, this always begins by first invoking one of the elements.

Thirdly, speaking the keyword of the spell that finally invokes and released the magic that was defined in the incantation.

Your mother cast a few spells as well. From her, you found out that her attribute she was familiar with was only fire. As for you, you soon found out that you were compatible with Fire, Water, Earth, and Air magic.

"Oh fire! Flames of my soul, gather and create. Conjure Flames!"

You trained for most the day. But the end of it you were completely exhausted.

QuoteExhausted condition, not that it affects you since you'll be resting again tonight.

You can work with me to define your spells. Just give me a list of how you want them to be, and I'll pump out some samples.

This was exactly what Mako had craved. He at last felt alive like he had awoken from a coma. His life had indeed been one of peace and it was great. He felt that the day had progressed well and he was extremely exhausted. He spent little time eating, thanked his mother with haste for her patience and quickly wrapped up his end of day routine. Date: Day 4 - Early that morning

Before turning in that night Mako's mother discussed with him the idea of testing his skills in a bit more of a realistic situation. This would ensure he was grasping the concepts and be prepared for the coming duel before facing his father.

That morning Mako set out into the forest in search of opponents that would help him to grow in his new found abilities.

Just before stepping into the forest, Mako focused and cast Air Sense. His intent was to allow it to be active, his mana would go first into duration then into effect. He then followed his mother's example.

He quickly took note of the positions of the wolves that were lurking within the wood. Wolves were a nuisance after all that plague those farmers that lived near the edge of town. Parties were sometimes gathered simply to deal with them when they became to bold. This was a good chance to test his prowess and lend a hand to the village.

Before drawing his blade and preparing for combat he focused on his elemental powers once more. A ranged attack would be the best line of offense and gain him the element of surprise. This would have been a great time to harden his body, but that seemed to far outside of his range of abilities at this time. To many uses of mana could after all delay his ability to strike effectively.

Focusing on a single target, Mako gathered mana into the balm of his hand, tightening and compressing the mana into the center of his palm.

The moments flooded back through Mako's mind as he reviewed the combat in detail. Another screen had appeared along with more information. But what did it all mean? Those thoughts drifted away he was to tired to consider.

His thoughts of fear, rage and eventually excitement of victory slowly consumed his doubt. This was the iconic moment to raise your fist in victory and collect the spoils of your fallen foes. The smell of ash, smoke, along with burnt hair and flesh assaulted his senses. Perhaps it was the fatigue that over took him but as he gazed at the bodies, his mouth began to salivate. Mako's body began to move towards the corpses his body taking over as the fatigue clouded his senses.

He walked past the katana, and reached for the dead wolf. His body acting purely on instinct,

What happened next was something that he was certain was only ever seen in Horror Zombie shows.

You felt your mouth chew hard on the tough flesh, swallowing each mouthful with abandon. You continued to gorge yourself, yet, you still felt the urge to eat. Mako's mind took much longer to process what was happening while his body continued to feast. He did not feel like he was getting full. What a strange sensation to eat without any sense of fulfillment.  Much like being in shock he could not resist the urge to continue. Perhaps this was something that he should have done all along. Some parts were burnt and did not taste great but that did not seem to slow his appetite. Whatever this was it was some how tied to his development. The urge gave him the impression of the Blue Mage from Final Fantasy meets the Walking Dead.

QuoteI am choosing to fail it this time. Basically to allow the scene to play out.

Once Mako was done, he would retrieve his sword and head home for the day to attempt to train with his mother before calling it a day.

That night as Mako finished his training he reflected on the past day and the combat that had happened the day before.  His body since awakening to his Hero side revealed so many strange things. He was not only able to embrace magic to summon elemental forces, he was able to wield a katana with ease and he could eat things...OK THIS SHIT IS WEIRD!!!!

After a few moments of rolling around, eyes and stomach turning at the idea, with a deep breath he relaxed. As he breathed he was able to detect the slight smells in the air. Each scent was different carrying a unique smell, it was strange. Perhaps he had somehow gained the smell of the creatures he had devoured. What crazy ability was this! He both craved the idea of it all and at the same time this feeling terrified him.

He made up his mind to set out in the morning to explore the forest again. Perhaps he could find a creature that could benefit him in the coming battle. Perhaps a feline and or something with a unique reaction ability. What in the world is happening to me!

Day 5

You set out again on your journey after convincing your parents to let you out a second day. Along your way into the forest, that was when you realized something about the forest itself was different. The trees in one section of the forest were no longer the trees you remember from the day before. It was a forest of Sakura trees. You were here just the day before, but the trees then were completely different. It stretched on for miles.

This week of training had proven itself to be a more difficult decision than first expected. The thought of tackling a pack of wolves in hindsight was likely not the brightest move. This and many of thoughts of the past day fluttered through his mind as he headed back into the forest.

What in the world is going on here. He quickly took note of the strange terrain changes. Memories of his previous life flooded in helping Mako to identify the strange trees. A pang of nostalgia derailed his thoughts for a moment taking him back to different place and time.

But...these are not native to this world. He mused aloud, "Not only can people cross over after death but parts of the land can shift as well. What type of crazy shifting universe is this." His thoughts trailed off as a stark reminder of danger popped into his mind. What if this was an illusion instead. He did not recall such a creature existing in this forest but that did not make it any less possible.

He quickly cast air sense in preparation for danger.

Element of Air! Master of the Skies, gather, shape and enhance my senses. Air Sense!

QuoteCast Air Sense Spell - Using enough mana to increase the distance if possible.

He then slowed his progress into the wood, each step carefully placed taking into account his position on the wind.

QuoteSome balance changes since the last time you cast the spell, for AOE effects, the range Spell Effect is halved. Air Sense can now have a max range of 65 ft. radius at max overcharge.

There are also some Sakura trees in the New World, at least with your country of Isikawa, though, they are rare, most of them are only found in imperial city. They are considered to be a rarity/decoration only rich people use ever since the Shifting, which brought your country to the New World two decades ago.

Casting the spell, an area 65 ft. radius around you started swirling with winds, the slight sensations of them on your skin, giving you an idea of where things were. You continued at a cautious pace, keeping your senses attuned as you traversed deeper into the forest. The sights were almost unreal. Everywhere around you was covered in a hue of pink. Even the waters seemed to reflect the light from the pink sakura leaves.

Continuing to go further in, while keeping your senses steady, you eventually ran into what seemed like an old abandoned shrine.

Around the shrine, were what seemed to be bugs floating on the water's surface. They ranged from 2 to 3 ft. in length. There were about 10 of them.

But what caught your eye the most was what looked to be a girl, perhaps around your age, sitting on the steps of the abandoned shrine. For whatever reason, the bugs didn't pay her much attention. She wore an outfit that was similar in style to the shrine maidens of the imperial city. Though, her's seemed to show off more skin. The colors were all wrong as well, with plenty of blues and whites, accented by a golden yellow trim. Though, it was her hair color the most which gave you pause. Her hair was blue.

Your entire village were of Isikawan descent, so they all had dark hair. You knew that there were countries in the New World that had inhabitants with hair colors that ranged all the colors of the rainbow, but this was the first time in person that you've seen someone with an exotic hair-color.

The forest was absolutely beautiful. The sights were something right out of a dream. Where did this shrine come from was that here before? The small bugs floating on the water's surface stole Mako's attention but his eyes lingered for only a moment. A cute exotic lady was sitting on the stairs in the middle of the woods! Her hair was exotic and this whole scenario just seemed off.

His mind reviewed all of the possibilities attempting to sort out what this all meant. Finally, he sucked it up and walked towards the shrine. There was no better way to get to the heart of the matter than to ask.

Well I guess it was not going to be that easy after all. He was attempting the less combative approach but this was proving to be less of an option. Well like any good princess she was guarded in her watery abode. He had hoped that this week's training would center mainly around facing his father but if he showed up to the day of the battle half beaten to death well that would be a shame.

He needed to protect himself from injury as best as possible, something both offensive and at the same time defensive. How much control did he have over the elements what was the limits of his potential. Mako took a breath and began to imagine his entire body covered completely in a protective casing of metal. The idea of transforming his skin was strange at first but at its heart all of this was elemental in nature. Something that was hard, durable, flexible and protective.

As he feared he was surrounded. Instincts aside this time his form felt stronger at least a bit more protected. The level numbers had continued to improve through the green status screen. It was like being in a video game but in truth this was likely another form of magic. A way to better understand power and perceive the strength of things around you. Not the time for such experiments but he could likely gain impressions of his foes as well.

Surveying the distance and the number gathered Mako smiled and embraced the flow of mana that was within. It was so much easier now that it had been before.

He spoke with confidence,Element of Fire burst forth and devour my enemies! Elemental Flare!

This would teach these creatures for choosing to surround him. He muttered to himself, "By facing me you have each chosen your fate." Catch phrases seemed a bit to on the nose and slightly out of character for him.

Well he had certainly made an impression on the young lady sitting by the shire. What sort of impression he had made was uncertain. Before he made his way in her direction, he reached down for the bug that he cut down. Without a second thought he started to devour the insect to see if it would be of befit to his current venture. He was certain that he would need whatever edge he could possibly muster in order to defeat his father.

Once the insect was eaten, Mako resists the urge to continue to feast and gather his composure. Finally, he sucked it up and walked towards the shrine. There was no better way to get to the heart of the matter than to ask.

The young woman spoke and he light up inside. There was something about her that simply struck him as downright attractive. Perhaps it was some strange otaku desire running through his head, who knows.

Oh boy, something did not add up here. Her comments and reactions give the impression of a spirit maybe or perhaps some otherworldly dweller.

Mako allowed his vision to sweep over here to read her mana and try to get a sense of who she was, since she was indeed not human. Perhaps she had a status or some other identifying aura about her.

After a few moments of allowing the situation to sink in, he finally spoke up a bit unsteady at first, "I am indeed a human, at least I think I am. I do apologize for the rough treatment of the bugs they were ready to eat me alive so it was unfortunately survival of the fittest."

He allowed that to set in before he continued, "So you have always been here, that is very interesting, I have been in the forest a few times and before now never knew this place existed. Though it has only been a few days since I started to sense and grasp mana. Perhaps that is why I can see you?"

When you began to attune your senses towards her, you realized that she seemed to be glowing, in much the same way that you had seen mana glow from when you and your mother pulled it out from yourselves and placed them in your hands. When you began to focus on that aspect, that was when you realized she had a large amount of mana. At least, more than you sensed within yourself.

This whole situation was taking a turn for the strange, but what the heck. He needed to understand some of this so why not open up and see what happens. He had been living this past week as if everything were more or less normal. He needed to share with someone the fact that he was indeed two people or souls in one. It was confusing but maybe opening up about it might help.

Mako chuckled, "I am pretty sure you haven't seen that before. It's something that I recently learned I could do. I can eat creatures and learn their abilities." It just slipped out though perhaps he needed this. If she is a ghost, then no harm no foul in opening up.

He allowed that to sink in and continued, "I need to tell you something because well I need someone to help me figure it all out." He trails off for a moment. "I want to talk to you about what happened to me, but first who and what are you? Do you have a name? "

Mako settles into a comfortable sitting position hoping that she will do the same and not murder him where he stands. Trust is sometimes needed to successfully progress the quest after all.

Title: Re: [Mako] Chapter 1: 18th Birthday

Mako chuckled as she called him a mortal, "Wekll met Kiyo-sama, that is impressive that you once held the power of a deity. Perhaps then you are no longer a full fledged deity? Be that as it may I have a story to share with you. I am not of this world you see. I died in my world, and my spirit was reincarnated here. I see images in my eyes that give the impressions of status and ability. Since I turned 18 my old memories from my previous life has come flooding back in. Now I am alone in this world not know who or what my purpose should be. Perhaps I was meant to liberate my people from the demons."

Humm money for a blessing, that sounds like a wonderful exchange. Mako dug into his garments in search of some money, if he has any money on him he deposits it into the bucket. If no money is found, he will attempt to create coins that he has seen.

Mako picks up some rocks from the ground, visions transforming the rocks into metal and shaping them into the appropriate money. It was worth a try!

If he is able to produce the money or not after a pause he continues, "Kiyo, if you would like I could use a companion out there in this fight. I have ideas, I have plans but I am still a novice to how this realm works. I am currently mastering elemental magic but I feel that I will need to harness many other forms of magic to complete my vision. What do you say care to see what the world is like?"

Kiyo-sama puffed her cheeks.

"I am still a full-fledged deity!" Kiyo-sama proclaimed.

When you looked through your pants, you found that you had no money what-so-ever. Generally, farmers such as yourself don't carry loose change. You picked up a rock. Focusing on changing it into metal gave you a notification in that familiar translucent green window.

[okay]Ability not yet unlocked.[/okay]However, when you examined the rock, you got a feel of every mineral, iron, and crystal that made up the entire thing. This particular rock in your hand was 15% iron.

Mako nodded,"You have my word that I shall return to donate to your shrine." His face took on more of a serious look, "In two days time, I face my father to determine if I will be allowed to leave home with his blessing. We will duel and the first to land a weapon strike shall be the victor. If you have a blessing that can assist me in this matter I would be most appreciative." "A duel with your father? Oh! That takes me back... A samurai lord from the village that created my shrine had a son... And when the lord began to sell out his own people, that son challenged his father to a duel to the death!" Kiyo-sama said with stars in her eyes.

"Well, hurry up and donate then!" Kiyo-sama said eagerly. "And... Well... If you're leaving, come back here?"

Mako waived to Kiyo-sama as he quickly departed for home.

He rushed to his room grabbed the little bit of coin that he had on hand and smiled. At least he could do one good thing. Even if none of this panned out he had done a good deed.

He raced back toward the shrine without saying a word to his parents. Once he arrived back assuming no other encounters, he quickly deposited the coins into the shrine donation bucket.

He then turned to Kiyo-sama he lowered his head in honor, "I give this donation of my own free will and ask that Kiyo-sama the Water Goddess, bless me and help me to see my dreams become reality." He envisioned beating his father, gathering companions, founding a great enterprise and driving back the demons from the land. If one should dream, they should dream big.

Once the formalities were through Mako looked up with hopeful eyes, "Care to join me Kiyo-sama on this crazy journey?" He reached out his hand waiting to see if she would take his and accept his pact of friendship. Whether she takes his hand or not, "I look forward to the future and the path that we shall find."

It took two hours to get back home, then two hours to come back. This time around, the water spirit wasn't waiting at the abandoned shrine's steps, she was nearer at the entrance to it, right before the stone steps that made up its front entrance, and path on top of the water.

"Human!" She called out when she first saw you. She was waving her arms excitedly. Once you neared, she made her way back up to the shrine and waited for you to catch up.

Once you finished putting the coin in, Kiyo frowned however.

"I guess that was kinda okay... Were you raised in a barn or something? Well... a couple of centuries might have changed the traditions..." Kiyo pouted. "Most of the time people dropped a coin in... And they would do this thing where they clap their hands twice, then bow twice!"

She eventually smiled though, as she herself reached out for your hand. You held her hand then, and at least to you, it felt like any other person's hand. You hadn't really verified if anyone else could or could not see her, but at least, she felt real.

"It's been centuries since I left this shrine... So tell me, is the village Kurokumo still around?" She asked. "The people in that village were the ones that created my shrine. They're not too far away... Surrounded by sakura trees, mountains covered by them... Is that where you're from?"

Kurokumo did not sound familiar to you. Nor were you sure about her claim with the Sakura trees, as they were supposed to be rare. Even finding a forest of one such as this wasn't supposed to exist.

Mako listed to and chuckled a bit, "Though technically I may not have been raised in a barn, I am a farmer both in this life and the previous. I suppose that is some irony if you really think about it."

The fact that she had been so far removed from life for so long could bring about potential problems but for now it was best to just live in the moment. After all he had recruited a deity to his party! I wonder if I have to focus on the concept of party for the magic system to know we are companions.

He shrugged it was worth a try. He envisioned Kiyo as a member of his party, someone that was a part of his traveling formation.

Mako gave her another glance, "Kiyo-sama, I have not heard of the things that you describe. To be honest these sakura trees are quite rare and have not really been seen. As far as I am aware a forest of such trees should not even exist. I have also not heard of the village that you speak of. "

He paused allowing this to sink in, "We will be returning to Tamajima Village which is located in the Isikawa Sovereignty. Are you ready to depart, Kiyo-sama?"

[info]Knowledge (history): 29 & Knowledge (history): 31
You retained information pretty well, and not only that, you had the knowledge of two worlds in your head. However, this particular village was unknown to you. The same with a local water goddess of any sort.

Knowledge (religion): 29
You knew that your people worshiped 6 goddesses, the Goddess of Light, the Goddess of Darkness, the Goddess of Water, the Goddess of Earth, the Goddess of Fire, and the Goddess of Air. However, you also knew, from your mother, that long ago in the past, people worshiped local deities they called 'kami'. However, most of that practice had died out, and shrines like Kiyo's was something long forgotten. Although you don't recognize the name of her village, Kiyo doesn't seem to be the Goddess of Water you are aware of, she seemed to be much more similar to those 'kami' from an ancient time in Isikawa.[/info]When you brought up your Unlimited Internet blessing, then searched up Kurokumo village, as well as Kiyo the Water Goddess, there were a few things you noticed.

The first thing you noticed was that the search results now seemed to have been divided by different categories. One seemed to include results as you would expect back on Earth. The next category seemed be information related with Kurokumo. This category took the form of written accounts, along with official historical records.

From what you gather, the records from 'Kurokumo' was never a village in the Isikawa Sovereignty. In fact, this spoke of a whole different empire, called 'Tokoyama'. According to what you were reading, this empire neighbored another, and when a war broke out, Tokoyama's people lost. The Kurokumo village was one of the casualties, and it had become an abandoned village.

QuoteThe research above is involved enough to take at least 30 minutes. We'll do 30 minutes for each section of information using Unlimited Internet for researching.

As he reviewed all of the information it all started to make a bit more sense. She was a spirit or being of power that has since been forgotten. That information along with a better understanding of her accounts of time helped piece it all together.

QuoteChoose to fail social check; he was just testing to see how she would react.

Mako looked away for a moment and blushed, "You don't have to call me sama, after all you have lived much longer than I and I have certainly not earned the honor. You can simply call me Mako, but please do not add the other titles as you did previously. No one aside from you knows of my other past / death and I would prefer to keep it that way at least for now."

His ability had grown along with his prowess. His thoughts trailing off into the possibilities, he would likely be able to uncover other aspects of this world but that research would have to wait. His focus was on the moment and not into the distant future.

Mako finally calmed his nerves and gestured for Kiyo to walk with him, "Based on what I was able to put together, Kurokumo Village was once a part of the Tokoyama Empire. What I was able to find regarding it alludes to the fact that the Tokoyama Empire was destroyed by a neighboring Empire a very long time ago. Since that time the Kurokumo Village was destroyed and the only thing that remains is ruin. I am sorry that I do not have better news regarding this, Kiyo-sama."

He glanced at her from time to time, surprised that he was in the presence of a powerful spirit. His world had been truly turned upside down. Mako considered the boon she may pass to him and hoped that it would strength his grasp on his fate / future.

While the walked he thought to himself, "I feel like my instincts are right on choosing her to be by my side. She has a deeper understanding of magic and the universe, I suspect."

She listened to your explanation of Kurokumo village. Her normally joyous mood became a bit more sullen.

"That would... explain why no one came to visit me, huh?" She said somberly. "Some of the people in that village I knew from their birth to their death..."

Before the two of you left, Kiyo went back inside the shrine.

"Come with me for a second... There's one thing in here that I want you to take with you..." She said beckoning you into the shrine. Once you were in, she produced what looked to be a medallion. It was enshrined at the center of the building.

"I'm bound to that medallion. It's why I can't leave the shrine for very long... With the village actually... gone... There's no reason for me to be here anymore, right? We can take it." She smiled at you, but you can tell she was forcing it.

What an interesting concept that she is bound to an amulet. That certainly feels like a video game element to me. Also in ancient cultures it was not uncommon to worship an object. According to some scholars they believed those sacred relics held power and in some cases embodied the essence of their will. At least that is what the older half of his soul kept shouting out to him.

This was obviously important to her as it should be. Kiyo was essentially entrusting her power to him. Before accepting the gift he took the time to study the shrine committing it to memory.

Then bowing deeply he lowered his eyes and his neck.

He left the choice to her, she could entrust the amulet to him or bring it with her. He would not assume that was her intent.

With his head still bowed, "I promise you Kiyo-sama, that I shall protect you and work to find others like you. Once I have made my vision a reality, I will rebuild this shrine and cultivate belief in you. Please join me and help me build a world where freedom can be found without fear of persecution. I am not exactly sure how I will do this yet but I know that its possible with you by my side."

His voice took on a somber tone, "Remember that you are the shrine and that belief follows you."

Perhaps that was a way to unite the powers of the land behind his vision and his will. He would seek out other "kami" and rescue them from their forgotten tombs. Mako envisioned his screen again and thought to pin this as a note. He attempted to place a reminder that he would research and seek out other kami throughout the land (side quest).

The girl then took the medallion and held it up for a few seconds. She admired it for a bit, and then finally placed it around your neck. Before she pulled away, she leaned in and snuck a light kiss on your cheek.

After she pulled back, she had a mischievous smile.

"That's your blessing!" She declared as she smiled warmly at you with a hint of a blush on her face.

His face turned bright red as he blushed. Though not how he environed his first kiss, he was KISS BY A GODDESS!!! His eyes turned to hearts and danced for moment. Not exactly what he expected BUT this was so much better! He still felt ill prepared to face his father but at least he had done a good deed.

His eyes still averted and blushing, "Kiyo-sama, thaaannk yoouu for the blessing." He barely got the last part out before he looked away. Slowly sucking up as much as he could of his embarrassment, he started to walk towards the village, with a spring in his step. It was obvious that he was extremely happy; he just lacked the ability to show it properly.

He did his best to look composed, "Lets head home Kiyo-sama. Well at least our temporary home. Once this duel is done one way or the other, we will strike out in the world!"

Now where would she sleep? His mind wandered off in all the wrong places as they began their journey back.

Her comments about the surroundings being different were more than likely because of her inexperience in the outside world. "Kiyo-sama, once we reach my home there is a chance that no one will be able to see you. I will do my best to address you and work with you. When you began to focus on the material to increase the properties of the metal, you were able to almost feel and sense every part that made up the blade. You could sense each of the three types of specialized steel that master katana smiths use to forge it. It was finely crafted. You were able to find the small imperfections in the blade, some parts there were not quite sharp at all. You felt your mana drain a bit, making you slightly tired. What an interesting ability to have. Each property of the metal was obvious to him. The more he delved the deeper his connection to the katana grew. When he was finished and all of the imperfect metals had been removed it appeared to be as pure as it could be. He had the impression that the metal could be altered to another material as well. But what would you turn it into that was superior to the quality of the blade in his hands.

He turned to Kiyo, "Kiyo-sama what is a powerful metal that has magical properties on this world? I seem to be able to alter the state of this weapon but I have limited knowledge of materials on this world."

If she provided any insight he would attempt the alteration. If she was unable to provide assistance, Mako will turn to his terminal and search for metals with special properties, searching for anything that might give him an edge.

Mako will attempt to train on increasing his blade drawing and stance speed, for the last part of the day and all of the day before he was set to face his father.

At dinner he relayed to his mother that he would focus on his martial training tomorrow and would wait to continue magic training after the duel was over.

If there is time he begins his training on improved initiative. That evening he would prepare for bed without thinking of where Kiyo would rest. He was exhausted after a long day of training and travel and basically collapses to rest.

Mako's mind was focused as he prepared for the duel with his father. He knew that his dad would be quick, precise and likely a proficient swordsman. This meant that he would need to be faster and think outside the box. He had refined his blade that would certainly help in this endeavor.

He turned and smiled to Kiyo, "Kiyo-sama, today is the day and it is finally time to see if all that I have done to now has prepared me for this moment. No matter what, I will uphold my promise to you." Mako embraced Kiyo in slight hug and turned away quickly as his face turned bright red.

QuoteSpells that he would cast before facing his father are Air Sense and Guardian Armor. "You can do it Mako! I'll watch. It's not like anyone can see me anyways!"

"Of course Mako." Your mother said.

"And you will always be my son, of course. I've seen you training hard... and you even mastered some strange spells." Mako paused certain that his father would be waiting in a careful defense, but there was no time for that. He lowered his bokken into drawing strike and charged forward to strike.

QuoteUnsure where you are getting the +6 from, I'm seeing the following:

+5 (BAB) +4 (STR) +2 (charge) = +11

Adding the charge bonus as you mentioned you're charging in your descriptor. That comes with a -2 AC penalty.

You rushed forward, faster than your father could react to. He tried to defend and dodge out of the way, but you were just a bit faster. You managed to land a clean blow in just a few seconds of the duel starting, and everyone was staring in shock.

"Wha-" Your father began.

"You did it! I knew you could beat that old man!"

Mako stood in shock that he was able to land a clean blow so quickly. He looked to his father first with pride in his eyes but he quickly cast that aside and shifted his eyes to a place of respect. With a twist of the wrist he tucked the bokken behind his arm and gave a very deep bow. He was speechless and to a greater degree still unsure how he had moved so quickly.

After a few moments had passed he whispered, "Otou-san...thank you for...everything."

"How could I...? I thought I was pretty good... Am I getting old." His last comment made his skin go pale, but he eventually shook himself out of it as he sighed. A moment later he shook his head and began to quietly laugh.

"My boy, I'm not sure what happened to you, but to think you can best me that easily..."

"Very well... I can't go back on my word... When you came back covered in wounds a couple days ago, I thought that would be a sign that you would give up... But you kept training."

"So, Mako, what are your plans then? The life of a farmer out here isn't so bad..."

At last Mako relaxed and a smile returned to his face. "I have a lot of things that I want to do and more to share. I want to confide in you because I will need your wisdom I believe. All that I ask you keep an open mind."

He paused letting his words register with his parents and sneaking glimpses at Kiyo. He wanted to be sure she knew that she was a part of this. He was not doing this alone. He considered her to be a part of his team, a friend and a companion.

His gaze danced between his mother and father, "Can we please go inside, perhaps drink some tea and then I can discuss my vision with you. I would very much appreciate any counsel that I can receive. This may sound strange but I would ask that we prepare another space at the table and enough tea for four."

"Tea for four? I don't mind... but are you expecting any other guests? Tami-chan?" Your mother asked.

With that, the three of you, along with Kiyo following behind, made their way back indoors.

"There's something I need to grab, I'll be back down here though." Your father said as he went upstairs to retrieve something, leaving you and Kiyo at the table.

"I'll prepare the tea." Your mother said as she began prepping the tea.

"Mako! I bet as you are now you can put up a fight with some of the swordsmen back in Kurokumo! You were amazing!" Kiyo said, a hint of pride in her voice.

"As expected of my first follower, of course!"

Mako nodded to his mother and father as they departed the room. He then turned to Kiyo, "Kiyo-sama thank you so much for your confidence and praise." He paused for a moment, "I suppose I am your first follower, how about that! I will represent you proudly, I swear that to you. Your influence will grow again as we travel this world."

He thought for a moment then continued, "When my parents come back into the room, I plan to share with them who I am and my past life. I feel it is important that they know. Perhaps they will be able to shed some light on whom or what I am. Once the conversation turns to speaking of you, I plan to hold your hand and attempt to assist in manifesting your presence.  I figure if you share my mana that should boost your ability to stay visible. If they know about you then perhaps we can begin to spread the word of your existence again and help you to grow."

Mako allowed his words to settle upon her shoulders, "Any advice before they return? If you advise that you do not wish to be seen, that is ok as well."

"Mhmm!" Kiyo smiled happily and smugly. "The whole village used to worship me, you know?"

"Hmmm... I can physically move objects if I put my mind to it, but it tires me out too... But as for becoming visible? That might take a lot of mana. I don't mind appearing for your parents though, I would do at least that for my follower!"

It was the father who appeared first, bringing with him a small box. He then proceeded to place it on the table in front of the two of you. Your mother soon came as well, having prepared the tea. As you requested earlier, she had produced four of the teacups, and placed them on the table.

Mako, sat patiently till both his mother and father were in the room and waited on them before sipping his tea. Once he felt his nerves were in check, "I have a lot to talk about honestly and I hope that you two will keep an open mind." He paused allowing that seed to take root before he continued.

His voice was even but he was nervous, "I am your son, Mako but I was also Keisagi Subachi in a previous life. I have always known things before I knew them and my skills have come to me with ease. I chalked it up to being a prodigy or at least talented. The truth however is that I lived another life on another world. My previous self, Keisagi was a farmer as well, he studied kendo and worked on technology that does not exist in this world today. When he was around 40 years of age he was murdered by bandits for nothing. His life was a life of seclusion where he chose never to be a part of it. He was content to surround himself with just enough to feel accomplished but never stepped outside of that box. I had the mind and the ability but I never used what I was given."

The last bit came out in a rush and he had to stop and catch his breath. This was a lot he realized and it became his reality as he spoke. This wasn't in his head any longer it was made whole by voicing it to his parents.

He sipped his tea again then lowered his glass to the table, "When you handed me the katana for my birthday my lives collided and the memories came boiling up. Screens of abilities and skills appeared before my eyes. I do not know the details of summoned heroes but I believe I am one. Instead of being summoned I was reincarnated to serve a purpose in this world. I was given a second chance to make a different choice. There is so much more that I want to share with you about my thoughts of the future and what I learned in the forest. But I am sure that you have questions so I will stop here to let you take in all that I have said."

His eyes made contact briefly with Kiyo and he nodded. It was not quite time to reveal her presence but he wanted to assure you he had not forgotten her.

"Hmm... That's almost a fantastic story. And if it weren't for the... strange circumstances surrounding your birth, I wouldn't have believed it."

"The hero..." Your mother shook her head. "That... that might explain why you picked up on using magic so quickly... The hero of the imperial city, I heard, was the same way. Managing to pick up using the sword and magic well early."

"I'll explain before you give me a strange look." Your father laughed. "It's related with someone you're familiar with actually... The Shimizu clan, our neighbors? They run a small temple that they've setup here... almost 18 years ago now, too. You might not remember her anymore... But Tami-chan's mother was the one who lead the temples construction. Her name was Shimuzu Kane-san. Your mother was with child, and Kane-san had ridden to our small little village from the imperial city. Apparently she had been journeying for around a week. Once she got here, she seeked us out almost immediately."

"At first, we thought we were caught!" Your mother laughed. "But no... She didn't know we were deserters. But apparently, she had been given a foresight from the goddess that someone special was about to be born... We didn't believe her of course. But she insisted."

"After you were born, she decided to stay here... And it was actually due to her insistence that we had you tested for the elemental attributes, for magical potential. It turned out though... That you weren't compatible with anything."

"And now you're creating new spells that I never even knew was possible." Your mother smiled.

"Kane-san was planning to watch over you as you grow... But she caught an illness one day, and with our country in the thick of war with the demons to the west, she wasn't able to get any aid... She eventually passed that winter, leaving behind her husband and daughter. I believe you were only four when she passed. You might still remember her. Tami-chan was three."

He listed to his parent's tale and nodded his eyes in wonder. This was the first time they had opened up to him and revealed anything about who they really once were. All of the events were connected it would seem and gods it would seem played a part in some sort of way. I will have to put a pin in that one for later.

Mako smiled, "Thank you both for sharing all of this with me. It appears that things do happen and it would seem to a degree they are fated. I am pretty sure with a little bit of effort I could likely do nearly any form of elemental combination magic. So far I have limited my testing to what I believe I have needed to accomplish various events. Elemental magic seems to come to me very easily. I want to learn other types of magic and work toward mastering as many as I can."

Mako rolled back his thoughts, reviewing his childhood and briefly remembering events from his life that included Kane-san. His relationship with Tami seemed to revolve around those connections and it all made sense to him now.

He continued to glance over at Kiyo assuring her of her place in all of this, "After we decided on the duel, I trained and began to learn more about my abilities. Each of them plays a part in my ability to get ahead and advance my understanding of the world. One such ability allows me to both research events from the old world and events I am guessing (written) from this land as well. So far the time these events were written does not appear to affect my ability to look into them. I can also consume "eat" creatures and absorb one of their abilities into myself and use it as I see fit. This one is a bit gross but it has assisted me in several ways so far. As an example I devoured the wolves and now my sense of smell is heightened."

He then pulled out the katana and laid it on the table, "I can apparently manipulate the properties of metals as well. This seems to range from removing imperfections, identifying components of materials and potentially transforming the material into something else so long as it's metal in nature."

It was not quite time to reveal Kiyo but soon. Too much information at one time might over load his parents.

"Mastering other types? Well... Do you mean your spell of creating the metallic armor? It's a type of magic that is harder to master than the regular ones of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water."

When you began explaining your powers, both parents looked completely lost and confused.

"That's... interesting." Your father finally said. "The other powers of heroes that we are aware of are all related with combat... But the ones you mentioned... They are unique for sure. Though... I can't know for certain since I do not know much about the heroes."

"Neither do I." Your mother admitted. "If there's anyone in this village who might know, it would be the Shimuzu clan."

Mako listened to his parents and let all of the information thus far pass through his mind and process it. He knew what needed to be said so he didn't hesitate, "I think it is in the best interest of our family that my Heroic Reincarnation be left a secret between us. I shared this with you because I needed to not feel crazy and to possibly learn about my heritage. However, if too many in the village find out, it will bring to much danger here to you and everyone else."

He looked to his mother, "No mother, not just elemental magic, I can sense and detect that various other types of magic that exist within this world. To keep it simple for now we can simply refer to them as Disciplines. Our country appears to focus on the Discipline of Elemental Magic. I will need other Disciplines I believe in order to achieve some of my far-fetched goals / hopes."

He thought for a few and at last turned his attention to Kiyo, "I know there is more to discuss but I would like to introduce someone that I discovered while exploring the wood. I returned to the wood in hopes of boosting my skills and perhaps running across a creature that might aid in my upcoming dual. What / rather who I found instead was Kiyo-sama an ancient water deity surrounded by sakura trees in a lakeshore shrine. We spoke for a while and it appears that she was worshiped in these lands long ago but was never truly seen by her followers. We suspect due to me previously dying that I am able to perceive her presence. After agreeing to pay alms to her shrine, she has become my traveling companion so long as I assist in restoring her shrine to its former glory. I would like to introduce you to Kiyo-sama, goddess of the forest shrine."

He grasped Kiyo's hand and opened the mana up within and allowed it to flow through his hand into hers.

He waited in anticipation of her appearing.

When you began to push your mana into Kiyo through your hand, and then to hers, Kiyo herself began to concentrate.

From your parents point of view, what they saw was first her hand becoming visible, then slowly everything else. Your father looked at her wide-eyed, while your mother covered her mouth in awe.

In just a few more seconds, Kiyo was completely visible. Kiya smirked when she realized the two parents were able to see her.

"Kekeke! Hello mortal humans...! Who are... Mako's parents! I am Kiyo-sama!" She stated cheerily.

Both your parents couldn't respond, they both blinked their eyes in complete surprise.

"Who is...?" Your father said in amazement, as he himself sat up from his chair and stepped back in surprise. Your mother was a lot more calm.

"A goddess?" Your mother asked incredulously. "She is one of the six goddesses?"

"One of the six? No... I don't really know what you're talking about. But there's a lot of gods and goddesses! Not just six." Kiyo quickly corrected your parents.

"Quick Mako! Tell them that I'm an amazing goddess, and that you're my servant!"

Mako smiled at his work she was there and his parents could see her. Perhaps if she were to acquire enough followers maybe she would be able to take on her physical form without my assistance. Another alternative would be to provide her with some sort of mana battery. He would need to add it to his list for later.

Mako produced a large smile, "I would like to introduce you to The Great Water Goddess, Kiyo formerly worshiped by the people of the Kurokumo village that once existed in the Tokoyama Empire. I believe this makes me her first follower now and I hope to expand her influence in the years to come. Okaa-san, I remember in your teaching that you mentioned that kami were worshiped long ago. If this is correct, I believe that she is likely a kami that was worshiped back before the founding of the current gods of worship."

Perhaps his parents would be able to shed a bit more light on her origins.

"Kurokumo village? The Tokoyama Empire? They sound... Isikawan, but it's not something I've heard of..." Your father stammered as he placed his hand out for Kiyo.

On Kiyo's part, she simply stared at the pro-offered hand, but after a moment decided to shake it.

"Oh don't misunderstand Mako's father." Kiyo said haughtily. "I am a goddess! I wouldn't normally shake people's hands... But Mako here is special, and because you're his father, I suppose this is okay too."

Your mother nodded her head.

"A kami? Yes... I told you about that before. That practice did die out... So she's a kami then? I never knew they actually existed..." You mother shook her head. "Unfortunately I don't know much about kami, I'm not sure who might know much either, perhaps except the Shimizu clan next door."

After responding to you, your mother smiled warmly at Kiyo.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Kiyo-sama."

Kiyo nodded.

"And to you too Mako's parents!"

The interaction was more or less how he expected it would go. It was important that she felt included and perhaps with his parent's belief he influence may grow once more.

Mako smiled, "This is a joyous moment to bring our family together and for us all to know and acknowledge one another. The days ahead I fear will be hard but for the moment it just feels good to be a family."  He looked toward Kiyo, "I appreciate the kind words Kiyo-sama and I thank you for gracing us with your presence."

He paused for a moment considering his next actions. He would need to move on soon if he planned to take the fight to the demons. He also knew if he lingered to long he could endanger his family.

He looked to his father and mother, "Could you please invite the Shimizu members over that would be of assistance in shedding some light on what we may not understand. I worry about endangering you all but I feel that we can trust the Shimizu."

They run a dojo next to their temple, though, only Tamiko and a few others in the village are taking lessons." Your father picked himself up, then took some bottles. They were the soy sauce bottles that your family produced.

"Give these to them, it's been awhile since we had given them any after all."

Time, Mako felt was no his ally and he would need knowledge for several sources to achieve his goals. After delivering the soy sauce he was able to plead with the Shimizu family to come over and visit. He took a few moments to study their movements before asking for their presence.

Once everyone was inside and seated Mako quickly recapped what all he had learned and posed the same questions to the Shimizu hoping that they might know more about the Kami along with his origins. Perhaps if he better understood all that had happened he might be able to better assist Kiyo and himself.

He took on a formal stance, "I beg you, if you have any information that may assist in these matters it would be greatly appreciated."

Location: New World - Isikawa Sovereignty - Tamajima Village
Date: Day 7 – Late Evening

By the time you reached back home with the Shimizu clan, it was already getting late. Through the journey you and your childhood friend, Tamiko Shimizu had a pleasant conversation about nothing too important. The father, Shimizu Teiji, seemed to continually stare at you curiously. You had already known the family for most of your life, as the two have always been your neighbors, with Tamiko really being the only other person your age in the village that was close enough to hang out with. However, Teiji seemed to be more quiet than usual.

QuoteIf you want to RP that scene, we can make a side thread in parallel.

Soon enough you had given the recap of everything that was discussed, and it was then that Teiji nodded his head.

"So it's true... You are the hero." The Shimizu father then went down to both of his knees, and as everyone stared in shock, primarily your own parents and Teiji's daughter, he prostrated himself before you, touching his head to the floor in a dogeza. Tamiko was confused at first, but the realization came to her slower. Unlike her father, there was a hint of a blush on her features, and an awkard stare at you, but she too took her place beside Teiji and bowed in the same manner.

"My wife always told me that you were one of the heroes." Teiji explained, keeping his head down.
