[Vanguard] Book 1 - Chapter 4.5: Beaks

Sotu, now awake, cocked an ear toward Yuki but was looking at the birds in the distance. She only had a passing familiarity with the woman, as anyone from the same small village and familia might, but she could recognize the acerbic tone of her comment might not be well received. She wondered absentmindedly if there might be a fight, and if it might put her sister in danger. Normally she might not care about what other people were up to if it didn't immediately involve her, but then again... Mimsy had said to protect the others...

"Now now," Taiga said as the tension in the air put his tail fur on end, "We all have people who are relying on us to succeed for multiple reasons. Let's not disappoint them so close to the finish line."

He looked between Yuki and Ciara and then over at Eydris with a look that said he needed help. "There are plenty of things wanting to cause trouble on this trip. We don't want to waste our energies against each other when there are plenty of other things we can take our frustrations out on until we are somplace safer."

Day 4 - Early Morning

Rota threw her hands up in an attempted placating manner.

No, no my guys!" Rota said. "I can totally tell those eggs we got earlier are not Axe Beak eggs. Those eggs you found are much bigger than Axe Beak eggs. Probably one of the bigger ones I've seen."

She laughed forcefully when she glanced at both Ciara and Yuki. The tense atmosphere was hard to miss.

All this time the two Axe Beaks continued to stare, though one of them began to crouch, keeping its eyes towards the group. This one that was crouching seemed more-injured than its companion.

Day 4 - Early Morning

"Stop bickering." Jars announced as he got up from his slumber. His tone of voice was irritable as he looked over at Yuki. "We're paying you all to transport the goods, and help us protect it. Like our weretiger here said, we only have this last leg of the journey."

Day 4 - Early Morning

Mimsy frowned, not quite understanding Yuki's sarcastic comment.

"Actually I think don't think Goddess Thalia would like those kinds of jokes... She's more into umm... like bad comedy." Mimsy did know enough to realize that Yuki was being protective of the eggs taken the day before. Being in the same familia meant that Mimsy was more likely to take Yuki's side of the argument. So she turned to face Ciara.

"Yuki is right though, if you're keeping the egg, then Yuki can keep hers too!"

Taiga seeing where the conversation was going quickly cut in, "The creatures are injured pretty badly from the looks of things. The smell of blood is wafting off them in waves. Maybe the lions attempted to come after those poor things before they came at us."

He said pointing past the two groups to act as a physical barrier.

"Though if they are that injured they are probably going to be targeted again," he said the last part uncertainly, after all even if they were injured was it worth the time it would take to help. His heart said they should try to stop and help while his head said to keep on going and take this as a win.

Either way. the fact that they were injured would turn the topic away from the eggs and focused on the birds themselves.

     "Like you say, you're paying us to help you move your stuff, not to let you walk all over us. That's..."  Yuki turned to Jars and rubbed her fingers together with a wink and avaricious grin.  "Extra."

[Schnizzer]

Ciara's eyes darted to Yuki and her eyes squinted slightly, "Stopping to pick up something on the side of the road to pick something up is not the same as actively getting into a fight to try and capture a beast while we have valuable cargo that could be damaged or destroyed in the process. If you want to capture them then be my guest. If we have to get rid of the eggs we are getting rid of both but we may not have to." She turned away not addressing the woman's second comment and turned back to the others, "We're almost there. I suggest we push forward. Once in town we can take care of this shipment, get paid, and take our sweet time after. Remember, there are a lot of sick people depending on this. So stopping for everything we see not only cuts into the profit but means people have to suffer longer."

She watched the Axe Beak for a moment, "If it really is injured then it works in our favor. Maybe they will be targeted by predators instead of the horses."

"Well then, lets take a wide berth and show we mean no threat. If they chase us, we'll scare them off or worse, but for the time being its best to just keep an eye out on them and whatever did that too them and avoid that mess for the time being. If they are still there on the way back perhaps we can go egg hunting," Taiga sighed as he leaned back in the cart.

Day 4 - Early Morning

The one axe beak who had crouched lower began to squawk loudly then. With all the talking amongst the travellers in the wagon, before the wagon itself was too far away, that wounded axe beak started to sprint forward.

This seemed to catch the second axe beak by surprise. Instead of charging forth like its companion, the second one squawked almost as if in warning and confusion, and choose to stay in place.

[info]Initiative requested for all. I'll roll initiative forcefully after a few days as fair warning, and will use the Inactivity Actions tab in player's sheets if applicable.

If we're fleeing, we'll do Pathfinder Chase rules. Only one person handles the wagon's decisions for the players, eg, the driver, but other players on the wagon can help your own wagon, or hinder the opponent with various actions through circumstance modifiers, or even roll for that particular obstacle. Passengers need not to do anything but sit tight, post specifically if you have actions, otherwise I'll assume your character just holds on for the sudden boost, this way I can keep posting regularly. Declare who is driving the wagon. If you are on your own horse (potentially Ciara), you are free to participate as an actor in the chase.
